    This depends on whether you are considering what constitutes a “score” from the perspective of process vs. function/effect.

    Yes, it’s just a matter of definition, and for clarity, I use the phrase “original score” the way the Academy more or less uses the term: an “original score” is a score specifically composed for the movie as opposed to pre-existing music used in a movie. That’s just a technical distinction and has nothing to do with the quality or effectiveness of the music itself. “Original” refers here to “point of origin”, and not “inventiveness”.

    That’s how I generally use the term “film score”: it’s a score specifically written for a movie.
    Also Sprach Zarathustra, The Blue Danube, Lux Aeterna etc. all existed already independent from the movie, hence they are not “film scores”.
