Reply To: OSTs vs. C&Cs
This debate is back on my mind lately, as I’ve inadvisably bought a number of expansions lately. I had a little money, and it went to my head lol. I get very attracted to the product. The liner notes, the packaging, etc, but I’ve had to learn the hard way again that c&c is just not for me. I do not run the film in my head. I treat film music as some variant of program and absolute music. It needs to stand on its own for me to be able to spend time with it, and the musical narrative (not the narrative narrative) needs to be considered.
It seems to me most of the great film composers understood this, at least in the album era. It’s weird how many fans do not seem to get what they were going for. I think, although I could be wrong, that a lot of them are film fans first, and can’t really follow the musical logic when the score is out of order.
