Surprised to read that so many here don’t do playlists. As one who grew up with LPs, I think playlists are a major advantage of digital. I have no qualms about omitting tracks I don’t like, and adding others that I do. And I’m talking all genres, not just film music.

Back to the original question, I also think that when people came of age factors into the response. Ask any Mancini fan what they think of his 60s “soundtrack” albums relative to the corresponding film scores, and you’re likely to get the same answer. Even Mancini felt that he got the soundtrack albums wrong.
