Reply To: The Challenges of Horror and Dissonance

I saw the film on Wednesday, and – as mentioned in the ‘film’ thread – had a Q&A chat with the director on Thursday, at a pre-premiere in one of the Oslo cinemas. So I feel like I’ve been kinda immersed in the world of PASSENGER this last week.

The film was rather mediocre, but with some standout moments. The score, meanwhile, was rather buried in the mix. There are some guitar noodlings for the more “idyllic moments”, the wonderful choral music that alludes to the mythological backdrop (but again mixed too low!) and a whole lotta heavy dissonance. To be honest, the dissonance competed with gruelling sound effects for much of it, so I was not able to glean many details. I’ll have to listen to the album to see if the sound effects aspect of the dissonance was part of the music, or indeed the sound effects.
