Funny you should mention Vaughan Williams. I was instantly attracted to his music from an early age, but only those pastoral works, like Greensleeves, Thomas Tallis, The Lark Ascending etc. Because my dad had some of this stuff, and especially when he got the Classikon series (all 100 CDs), I delved into those. But then later, I discovered RVW also wrote a lot of difficult, dissonant music. That took me by complete surprise. I had to completely “re-wire” my relationship to RVW. I’m still not thrilled with that side of his work, but I might learn to appreciate it. As I mentioned earlier on in this thread, there are different kinds of dissonances, some I can stomach, some I cannot. It’s not all just one big pile called “dissonance” or even atonal music.
