Indeed. James Newton Howard was a Keyboarder and arranger for Elton John and Crosby, Stills, and Nash, among others, so there’s definitely also a “pop/rock” connection.
For sure that is but I just didn’t make the connection to Grusin and jazz. I didn’t even knew that JNH had solo albums before film scores…
He also arranged “Nights are Forever” for Jerry Goldsmith (TWILIGHT ZONE – THE MOVIE), as far as I know, that was his “entry” into the film score business.
That I did know!
Btw, I wondered for ages and never actually investigated: Is Newton actually a middle name or part of the surname. I alway file him under H like Howard.
