I’m guessing it’s pretty common for neighbouring countries? There’s also intense rivalry between Norway, Sweden and Denmark in sports. Especially Norway and Sweden in winter sports. But the Danes don’t like it when we do well in summer sports, and especially not football – because they consider themselves the “big brother” in that area. Perhaps not so strange, since they’ve traditionally been better, and even won the Euros in 1992. And now they’re not even qualified. A lot of envy, I think. And they constantly bring up our oil money, as if every single Norwegian is stinking rich (I live well below the poverty line). I’m a quarter Dane myself, and have spent every summer there since 1982, so it’s a double-edged sword for me, this.
Of course, it’s a bit different for Britain, since you’re actually in a “united kingdom” that not everyone likes to be part of.
