I can’t say that I agree. I found Villeneuve’s ENEMY quite a tense movie, and SICARIO makes my top ten film list of this century, it’s one of the best (and most gripping) cop thrillers I have ever seen (and a favorite film of mine). I also love ARRIVAL, which is a very intelligent science fiction movie, and I very much enjoyed BLADE RUNNER 2049 for what it was. And I found these movies were anything but “distant”.
