I think he’s “back door” emotional, meaning you have to glean it yourself. It’s never overtly so. And for as much as I like ‘on-the-nose’ emotional resonance in a film (it’s not for nothing that Spielberg is my favourite filmmaker), I can really appreciate that approach too. It’s between the lines. I felt that way with all of his films.
