Reply To: Is the DUNE world for you?
And yet I am not sure what the movie (I know there are two films now, but it is essentially one long adaptation of the original DUNE novel by Frank Herbert) is really about. While much is at stake, it is never quite clear why we should care quite as much as the film seems to expect us to.
I also read quite a lot of science fiction in the 80s. But none of the Dune books. But I remember that it was often hard to identify with any of the characters. But in a way that was part of the journey. Often these novels or stories were about other worlds. So, I didn’t necessarily expect the characters to behave like humans. I didn’t expect each story to be a parabel of human life. Sometimes the more other worldly and incomprehensible the better. Because that was the idea, to read something out of this world and not something familiar. With fantasy it is a little different. That is more grounded in our human world.
