I first discovered Gabriela Ortiz, a contemporary Mexican composer, at a violin concerto performed by MAria Duenas in Los Angeles at the Disney Concert Hall, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. Ortiz writes dense, difficult music that takes time to appreciate, but these two releases capture some marvellous colours and drama — and an amazing talent.
