Awful if there is not even a single one anymore.

An hour to the nearest cinema (and back) is very cumbersome.

While I do live in the 2nd largest city over here it takes at least 30min using public transportation I to the next cinema as well. For some more in the inner city even an hour if you include all walking. By car – I even have one – it would be faster but the time to search for a parking slot would kill it. Not to speak of expensive parking houses…
I admit I don’t got to the cinema that often at all. Even in more active times back then probably not more than 2 times a month or so…
