Whoa, I can imagine that that’s annoying. Well, I don’t have to imagine, I know it’s annoying when computers won’t do what you want them to do. That’s the main reason I know so much about them, so I can make them do what I want to do.
However, I have (and have for quite some time) the strict philosophy of separating the “software” from my files. So whenever I change software, I just “direct” it to my files and it works. Mostly at least.
You seem to be very set on an older version of iTunes, which I admit has the nice color effects which the newer one doesn’t, but relying on out of date or older version software is of course always a perilous path, one I don’t dare to take myself. I just always use the current version of iTunes and that’s that.
