But as I said, if I didn’t think a film score worked as pure music, I would personally never call that music great… just serviceable.
I think film music sometimes operates under different rules. It can lean up against sound design, and skirt the boundaries of what is music in the first place. Or it can definitely be music, just more about the “mechanical presence” in the film, and less about the independent musical value. That’s why some scores can easily be great in the film, but not great listening outside.
