Happy birthday to him! I’m a big Kate Bush fan, and he and Peter Gabriel seem to have helped her along a great deal.
However, my great love within the terms of reference of this discussion is Sparks, specifically Ron and Russell Mael. From being gobsmacked by the drama of This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us on Top of the Pops in 1974 to being entranced by “Mad”, their 26th studio album released in May last year, I doubt there’s ever been a band like them.
Continually re-inventing themselves and dragging other artists in their wake, they’re described in the Edgar Wright documentary The Sparks Brothers as “your favourite band’s favourite band”. From glam rock to prog rock to electronic work with Moroder to writing film scores (eg JC van Damme’s Knock Off and Leos Carax’s Annette), the mix of quirky melodies and genius lyrics is utterly intoxicating to this listener.
Very happy to have seen them on stage twice, and their live shows are astonishing for gentlemen either in or near their 80s.
