Yes, I think we as Gen X have been the most adaptable generation. Not only in technological terms, coming all the way from hardcore analogue to hardcore digital, but also in terms of navigating the political landscape. Most of the controversies stem from the Baby Boomer generation (who are in power positions now – the Trumps and Putins and Netanyahus of this world) or young men in their 20s and 30s who are increasingly attracted to the extreme right. I have a feeling — completely unfounded by empirical studies, of course — that our generation steers away from controversy as much as possible. We’re sufficiently progressive, being the children of the ’68 generation (people who were 18-20 in ’68, hippies and everything), but not outlandishly like the far left has become (we sneer in silence at cancelculture). And we’ve been sufficiently warned of the dangers of right wing extremism in our early years, not to be tempted by it in adult years.
I don’t know, it’s just a theory I have, based on what I see amongst my community and in the media. So there is hope in that, that the evil old men will die out soon and a more reasonable generation will take over, but also worry in that the young generation will revert things back, unless they’re steered elsewhere in the interim.
As always, there are plenty of exceptions to this theory, of course.
