Rahman is the honorary guest of this year’s WSA in Ghent, which makes it very tempting to go.
That’s a great scoop for them, as the “Mozart of Madras” is a worldwide icon. I’ve been a big fan since LAGAAN in 2001, and have 26 of his soundtracks (I was kinda obsessed with Indian cinema in the 2000s and even taught it at uni).
Don’t really know much of him and don’t really have him on my listen list. I have these albums digitally:
– WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH (don’t remember anything of it, must been years I listened to it)
– LORD OF THE RINGS (a musical he did with someone else. Some nice dramatic tracks)
– ELIZABETH THE GOLDEN AGE (which he did with Craig Armstrong who is not really a favorite of mine actually, don’t remember it either right now)
Not too keen on his LOTR work, to be honest, but the other two you mention are excellent.
For fans of rambunctious orchestral music, I recommend this cue:
But my Rahman love is mostly centered on the songs and the more India-meets-west/poppish tropes here and there, throughout his work. Or when he goes more etheral, which is quite often, like in 2019’s BEYOND THE CLOUDS.
