Expecting it in the mail soon. I supported the FSM web site renewal Kickstarter campaign, and this was one of the rewards.
Apparently, you can now buy some “faulty” copies of this book for $15. But with the ridiculous shipping costs, it’s not really a deal.
I just received it. Looking good. I got it from Amazon.co.uk a little late so they gave me a £15 gift card. That’s good customer service.
I also got it, a few days ago. It looks good, yes. Haven’t read a lot of it yet, but what I’ll probably go for first will be the new, and exclusive for the book, personal “retrospective” articles by some of the most prominent FSM contributors (Lukas himself, Andy Dursin, Joe Sikoryak, Doug Adams, John Bender and others), about their “FSM story” and how they got involved with it. I didn’t know this would be included. Should be some interesting and fun reads. And I see there’s lots of stuff that I’d basically forgotten but should be worthy of a re-read. When I looked at the table of contents with the titles of the articles, there were several that made me go, “Oh yes! That was a good one!” 🙂

Didn’t buy it but looks tempting nevertheless. As probably all I have the PDF archive of FSM that Kendall once offered for free but due to the amount of it didn’t really read anything… A “best of” certainly could help here 😉

I wrote the Danny Elfman Buyer’s Guide. But I don’t think that, or any of the other buyer’s guides, are featured in this book?
I was on vacation, so I got my book today. Not yet checked anything in it, other than that the last pages list all FSM released albums, including the latest (and probably really last) FSM release, the Ray Ellis one.

Makes sense as some of these scores are hardly available on the regular market. What good is a buyer’s guide for something you cannot buy.
True. I remember the frustration when reading the Williams guide in the 90s that JANE EYRE was such a must-have, and it was so difficult to find, and so expensive on the secondary market. I never got that original Silva release, but thankfully got the reissue that came out in the 2000s (never got the NEW new release that came out a few years ago, though).
But they were great overviews. My favourite articles in the magazine.
(by the way, one of these days I need to make a Part III of the Elfman guide, since 20 years have passed since the last!).
I agree. In the age of streaming a buyer’s guide could be easily repurposed into a listeners guide.
One could even add the Spotify link.Christmas 2024 I got that film score calendar from my wife with 356 album covers of famous soundtrack albums and each sheet had below the cover the Spotify link to the album. That was nice.
By the way, today arrived my copy of that book. I never read FSM. So, this is completely new content to me.

I never use Spotify, as I always had serious issues with the sub-par sound quality. But of course, in a day and age where everyone listens via Bluetooth speakers/headphones, and Spotify has become the most widely used streaming service, sound quality obviously doesn’t matter all that much.
Deezer, Tidal, and Qobuz all offer better sound quality.I was just refrerring to our niche where things still work a little differently 😉 Interesting btw. that my 13 year old nephew is currently hooked on DVD and BluRays since he got a beamer (but not CDs). And he likes to make fun of me because I like to watch the end credits. Trying to get him a bit into film scores. He recently visited a Harry Potter concert with suites of the three Williams scores.
A wonderful walk back into History! the Book is essential. Hoping more editons will come out in the future.
I’ve just finished going through my copy. Not having read any of the print versions and precious few of the online ones (despite subscribing) I thought it was a pleasant, easy, amusing read.
Don’t want to pick favourites amongst the contributors, but the Kaplans are hilarious.

Yes, I think I remember reading that. Of course, that was around the exact time that Maurice and Jean Michel were reconciling a bit. Nothing that turned into a warm father-son relationship, but doable. That lasted pretty much to Maurice’s death in 2009. But after Maurice left Jean Michel and his sister out of the will, JM then spent the next 15 years battling the will in courts, but ultimately lost in 2024. A shame.
A shame that he lost or a shame that he took it to court?
Just asking, because I am not at all familiar with the case beyond a rudimentary awareness that it happened.
It’s of course always a grievance such things.Yes. Not a particularly warm story. Maurice left his wife and 5-year-old JMJ to seek fortune in Hollywood. JM didn’t see him again until he was 18, and they kept a non-existant relationship for many years, barely seeing each other. Then they kinda made up around 1993, and had a decent relationship until Sr. died. And then the whole unfortunate will situation that must have soured it again, post-mortem.
He didn’t need the money, of course, but it would have made sense if it was his family that managed all those classics from Jarre’s canon, like LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and DR. ZHIVAGO. To say nothing of the emotional connection. Instead, everything went to his last wife, Fui Fong Khong, with whom he was married since 1984.
