I assume any film music fan, or music fan in general, worth their own pants has at least one physical boxed set in their collections. What are yours?
I don’t have a lot, but I have these:
3. May 2025 at 16:22 #4722I indeed have less than I wanted ;): The same Star Wars and Indy Boxes and the Charles Gerhardt Box a few years ago. Not sure if those count as boxes already but I have a 3CD Laurie Johnson with THE PROFESSIONALS (jewel cases but in a paperbox) and a the pre-FSM box BEN-HUR 2CD Edition (same format as teh SW and Delerue, how that is called escapes me right now…).
3. May 2025 at 17:09 #4723I made a photograph of just my John Williams boxsets. But I cannot upload pictures here. So just in words.
I have these John Williams boxsets
The Phillips Conductor Boxset
SONY Conductor Boxset
SONY John Williams – The Great Movie Soundtracks (4-discs)
The Legend of John Williams (20 discs)
Desaster Movie Box (4 discs)
Harry Potter – The John Williams Scores (7 discs)
Indiana Jones Concord Boxset (5 discs)
Star Wars Trilogy – The Anthology Boxset (4 discs)
John Williams in Berlin (2 CDs, 1 BluRay)
John Williams in Tokio (2 CDs, 1 BluRay)
Across The Stars (1 CD, 1 DVD)Apart from that I have the Bernard Herrmann phase-4 boxset and the Planet of the Apes boxset. And the 12-disc Charles Gerhardt boxset.
But I think, that’s it for soundtrack related boxsets.
Edit: Oh wait, no! I almost forgot my two lovely Ennio Morricone Ecoutez Le Cinema boxsets. And my 6-disc Philippe Sarde Anthology boxset. All wonderful boxsets.
3. May 2025 at 17:15 #4724That’s a pretty good haul!
Btw, You can upload pictures at https://imgbb.com/
3. May 2025 at 17:35 #4727By the way, of course I am not going to buy the new SONY Anthology Vol. 1 of John Williams. And probably also not the other two upcoming volumes.
Because I guess, I already have everything they contain. For a long time I was very hesitant to get the SONY Conductor box because I basically already owned everything from it that I was really interested in. But then it became so cheap, that I couldn’t resist. And it actually contained some nice things, that I didn’t own before.
3. May 2025 at 18:47 #4728Was it to display on your shelf?
3. May 2025 at 19:23 #47293. May 2025 at 19:34 #4730No, but I was primarily interested in all the stuff composed by Williams. And there I was more or less complete. But I then enjoyed some of the other records as well like the Gershwin album or the cinema serenade albums.
3. May 2025 at 22:24 #4741My question was more — since you already owned most of the music on the set, was it only purchased to display on the shelf or the mantle piece or whatever, an “item”? But lookin’ good, that collection. You have Tokyo and Across the Stars – Deluxe Edition. Both on my want list.
3. May 2025 at 23:05 #4742I have to be more precise. I didn’t have most of the albums already. I just had the Yo-Yo Ma cello Album, the five sacred trees, an american journey and some of the recordings of Williams composition on the other Sony boxset, which covers about 90% of the actual Williams pieces of the box. But I didn’t have any of the Boston Pops albums. And I didn’t have the Star Wars album as well. So, it wasn’t just for the shelf but a lot more music to explore.
The Tokyo box was a black friday sale for around 16 Euro if I remember correctly. And I am quite happy with it. The ET suite is great.

Some interesting sets there. What is in the Harmonia Mundi box?
7. May 2025 at 18:31 #4770Sigbjørn always hates it when I post something from that box, but truth be told, it makes up a healthy portion of my entire collection of classical music on physical format. It was a gift from my dad, and has 29 discs with all kinds of stuff — often unusual versions of famous pieces, and some quite obscure:

7. May 2025 at 19:16 #4773Ah, oh, wow, lots of good stuff I see. I just thought at first it was film music related, and I don’t recall any film music on Harmonia Mundi ever.

Not at all! I have it myself and it’s a great collection of highlights from the label. One of my early box set purchases. Their later Lumieres box is a nice companion to this.
8. May 2025 at 21:59 #4795I forgot one, the OLSENBANDEN box that was released a few years ago:
14. May 2025 at 12:10 #4882My latest box set is this:

It’s 12 discs of the music of Pierre Boulez plus one disc with an interview. Perhaps I am strange, could be, but I really enjoy quite a bit of Boulez’ compositions. When I first encountered them, I admit, I was puzzled… His first piano sonatas sounded at first to me like random notes…
It was “Sur Incises” that made me really listen… it was a composition that “clicked”, and it’s one of my favorite works of modern music. I don’t know why, but I find at least some of Boulez’ compositions highly “soothing” in a strange way. I find Boulez was an interesting personality and I’ve seen him a couple of times in concert as a conductor. So while this box doubled up on a few things I already had, I had to get it.15. There are some I would like to have if not funds would always get in the way. Might not help you but the Bernstein Collection at least is – I think – completely available digitally.
15. May 2025 at 22:26 #4897Here it is, with additional releases of these specific recordings of Torn Curtain and To Kill a Mockingbird added to the end of the playlist (I don’t know if they use the same master).
19. May 2025 at 10:34 #4911That’s a great box. I don’t have it, but I have some of the titles individually. In some cases, the only version I’d like to own of said score. Like THE SILVER CHALICE (although I also have the suite on the LEGENDS OF set) and YOUNG BESS.
27. May 2025 at 09:09 #4989You have them on LP or digitally? I’m not aware of any of the albums having been released individually on CD.
27. May 2025 at 09:17 #4990Digitally.
31. May 2025 at 11:26 #5035Anyone gotten the new Barry box set from Quartet Records, The Polydor Years? How is it?
31. May 2025 at 15:15 #5038Anyone gotten the new Barry box set from Quartet Records, The Polydor Years? How is it?
I don’t have that. But as you mention that I remember that I have that 6-disc boxset THE MUSIC OF JOHN BARRY – THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION with recordings of the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.
That’s a great box, if you are mainly interested in the essentials. I find, with Barry mainly the themes are interesting. Generally, I am not super interested in Barry’s underscore. Of course there are exceptions.31. May 2025 at 17:40 #5039Does this Silva/Prague box contain only newish recordings, or do they go all the way back to the 80s/90s when this team produced a lot of shoddy recordings?
31. May 2025 at 20:06 #5040Cannot say for sure. The boxset is from 2014. And I like the sound good enough.
31. May 2025 at 21:16 #5041I see, although I was referring to the playing, not the sound. Some of their older recordings give the impression they only had time/budget for one take, with little time for practising.
29. November 2025 at 16:39 #6771Bear McCreary’s LOTR music appears to be coming out in a box now. Anyone planning on getting that?
I like some of his music for this show, but I’m more than content with my whittled, 63-minute playlist of the first soundtrack in digital file format. There’s a lot of meandering inbetween, so I can only imagine what a box would be like.
29. November 2025 at 16:53 #6772You mean the box for season 2 or is there even another box?
I saw the ads for the season 1 box. And I didn’t long for more music than what was alread, on the 2-disc OST. But in many ways I thought, that this box represented in optimal form what a lot of soundtrack fans are longing for. If I were such a huge fan this box would have been a dream come true.
