Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterYou mean the box for season 2 or is there even another box?
Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought the new box coming out was from all the series so far? I admit I haven’t been paying much attention.

GerateWohlParticipantThere was a boxset last year with every minute of music from season one. And at JWFan someone shared that such a box is also coming for season 2.

Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterAh, OK. Thanks!

Malte MüllerKeymasterThose boxsets are exactly what is also available digitally already, right? I just watched season 1 and 2 the first time. Glady one of our public broadcasters somehow licened it for broadcast and for limited time also for streaming (incl. the English version gladyl). Not Shore but somehow following the general sound. IMHO very well done and very “old school” present in the episodes. But I also figure the two “best of” 2CD albums will do for me. As much as I like McCreary and that he gets our lenghly albums in general there is often quite some filler stuff.

GerateWohlParticipantI found the double album for season 1 a little too long and the one for season 2 a bit too short. Much good stuff left off.

Probably as usual different opinions. I have to admin I didn’t listen to the season 1 one again since I just watched it and don’t have the season 2 one yet at all. Funds in any case will not allow to get all these individual extra albums anyway…

GerateWohlParticipantI think, even though both are double albums the season 1 album is about double as long as the season 2 one.

Malte MüllerKeymasterIndeed, seems season 1 has 2:33 hours and season 2 “just” 1:40 hours. Still plenty as surely season 2 will re-use a lot of themes introduced in season 1 already. (Do I sound like Thor ;-))

Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterNot yet, but you’re getting there. 😉
By the way, here’s my playlist of the first OST, which satisfies all my needs:

But yes, that box DOES look handsome, and would no doubt have looked good on the shelf.

Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterJust finished listening my way through the Irwin Allen box. It has that sixth “bonus CD” which includes interview snippets and sound effects. I mean, probably cool for the fans of the shows, but of marginal interest to anyone else. I think I played it once, when I got the set in the 90s, but never since. And I won’t now either. What’s your take on bonus material like this in boxed sets? I’ve noticed that it’s actually MORE common now than it was back then.

SophieParticipantI have the Star Wars Anthology. There are a handful of John Williams scores I prefer in complete form (The OT, Jaws, Close Encounters), and it still sounds the best of any release. I just wish CD1 wasn’t the album cuts rearranged in loose chronological order.

GerateWohlParticipantI wonder if I am ever going to buy a box set again in my life. I don’t see anything relevant for.me at the horizon.
Maybe the Sony John Williams anthology Vol.3 if it contains something interesting.
Maybe next year there will be a Star Wars anniversary box set with previously unreleased music (I don’t believe it yet).I have the Star Wars Anthology. Yes. I am very happy with that anthology set, too. But it’s kind of time for an upgrade.

Nicolai P. ZwarParticipantWhat’s your take on bonus material like this in boxed sets?
I think they are what the title says “bonus” material. Not essential, not belonging the the “main presentation”. Hence I usually don’t listen to them in context of the “main program”, but “separately”, depending on what they are. “Bonus” tracks can obviously be all kinds of stuff: alternate takes, alternate cues, alternate edits, demos, sound effects, dialog, interviews, source cues, jingles, whatever…
“Bonus tracks” are for those who want to explore something in more depth, get a bit down to the “nuts and bolts”, perhaps learn something about the process. They are like alternate or deleted scenes from movies. (I always thought the alternate ending sequence on the SE7EN Blurays very interesting, however I am very glad they went with the ending the movie now has.) Interesting to see and learn something about the score, but not “essential”.So I sometimes listen to them, but often at a much later point, often when I’m more familiar with the main work. Some “bonus tracks” I actually put to use: for example, sound effects libraries can be quite nice. I have outfittet my smart phone with some sound effects of Star Trek sounds from the STAR TREK GENERATIONS movie, so when I get a PN on Whatsapp, it’s the communicator sound from STAR TREK.
Some are just interesting, like Craig Huxley performing Blaster Beam solos (to demonstrate the instrument) on the La-La Land 3CD presentation of STAR TREK – THE MOTION PICTURE.
But whether they are on a regular CD or in a Box Set… they are “bonus”, like something “on top”… added goodies, for Academic interest or just plain fun, that you can do with as you please or ignore.
I have a Debussy La Mer recording with a bonus CD where Pierre Boulez talks about his relationship with and approach to the music of Debussy, Webern, and Mahler, which I love, because it gave some real insight.24. March 2026 at 10:07 #9353
Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterYes, I suppose what I consider “unnecessary padding”, other people will find useful. It’s just a bit irritating if it jacks up the price. In this day and age, interviews and sound effects can be easily found online, so wouldn’t want them near a set of music. Unless, of course, the interviews were made exclusively for the set.
