He, he…tell us what you REALLY feel, Nick.

It’s the annual Christmas party (“Julebord” in Norwegian, literally translated as “Christmas table”) with my friends in a couple of hours – this time hosted at one of them rather than a restaurant. We’ll be having a form of lamb ribs that is common in Norway, called ‘pinnekjøtt’ (literally translated as ‘stick meat’) – more info here. Gearing up with a couple of beers, right now the draft beer from Nøgne Ø (Naked Island), the local brewery from my hometown in the south. Will be having some good red wine when I get to the party.

That’s a lot of Norwegian culture and tradition in one paragaph that none of you have heard of!

    Anyone else doing Christmas parties?

We sometimes do/did kind of that with the tradition of “Julklapp” (we also call it “Wichteln” after – not sure of the English term, I don’t mean elves – the helping hands of Santa Clause) I believe is also known in Norway/Scandinvia in general. General rule picking by kind of lottery someone to secretly from a group who then gets a present without knowing from whom. Fun variant is “Schrottwichteln” (“Schrott” => “Junk”) with things as present you really want to part with 😉

Going on a julebord with four friends in a few hours at a restaurant, with all you can eat of pig, lamb, and great desserts!

Not good for the match weight..😅🙈

Relaxing at the cabin with this one now. I’m not a wine connoisseur by any means – I’m usually content if it has a rich, full-bodied taste, and this one fits the bill nicely.

Enjoy your «julebord»s, Thor and Jon! 😊

As for Christmas parties, we had one at work last week, but there they served tapas, and not any «ribbe», «pinnekjøtt» or the other traditional Norwegian Christmas dishes. I guess those might be a bit too exotic for many of our foreign employees 😊.

Come to think of it, I might not have any of those myself until Christmas Eve this year. There will be couple of gatherings at some friends’ houses, but that will be mostly eating Christmas cakes and drinking mulled wine («gløgg»), and including, on the 23rd («Little Christmas Eve», as we call it here), the traditional yearly tasting of my friend’s home-made (and very high-viscosity) eggnog 😊.

Ugh. Really hung over today. But fun evening last night.

‘Julklapp’ is Swedish for ‘Christmas present’, I wonder if they took the word from German or the other way around. And yes, many workplaces seem to have this tradition.

Nice! Zinfandel always gives a kick. I’m not a mountain cabin person, but I have to admit that looked cozy.

Well, it sure is a nice place to wind down after a stressful week at work, as this week has been 😊.

    The wine at my place

My weekend evening listening is coming to an end. Happy 2nd Advent and good night.

Who’s the other drinker, Nick? Your wife?

And what’s that album in the background? The same as you posted in the “What are you listening to now?” thread?

Sorry, my fault, the image was probably too large; I just did it from my smartphone and should have reduced the image. I compressed it and hope it’s better now.

It’s shot from where I usually sit when I listen to music. The second glass of wine is of course my wife’s. The album in the Background is a Brahms Violin Concerto LP, it’s not what I was actually listening to at this point (though sometimes that’s a spot where I put an LP, even when I’m just listening digitally).

    No excuses necessary 😉

Indeed. To «drink with both hands» is actually a Norwegian expression.

Having a very ME Friday, the only one I’ll get before Christmas. Finished work duties, cleaned the apartment, cleaned myself(!), now wrapping some Christmas gifts with red wine in the glass and HOME ALONE on the stereo, I’m soon going to make a pizza from ground up and then relax the best I can for the remainder.

    Cheers!
