Mark BurgessParticipantAh, sorry. Can’t keep up with you lot..

Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterGroovy theme, almost TOO energetic.
Although I like several of Kanno’s works, I don’t think I ever investigated the famous COWBOY BEPOP properly. A proper ‘hole’ in my popular culture knowledge from the last 25+ years. Now’s a good an opportunity as any, I suppose. Thanks (to both of you)!
Shame I don’t have access to Netflix anymore, because I see the original TV series is on there.

Mark BurgessParticipantI think the three albums of music from Cowboy Bebop (original series) are some of her best works. Beautiful jazz and pop, mixed with humour. Some fabulous songs and lovely instrumentation. Lighter than the music from Ghost in the Shell and very different from her Turn-A Gundam music for orchestra.

I haven’t and I never investigated her work in general as well. Just looked my local Netflix indeed has the old animated series. I though they only had their live action remake.
Speaking of that, I am not sure but I think she re-scored that and not just the old score was re-used? Just in case unknown, Netflix had dropped the complete 4+ hour score on Youtube:

Thor Joachim HagaKeymaster4+ hours is too much for me. Three whole CDs for the original series also sounds like a lot. Would have loved a ‘best of’. But I’m sure it’s possible to whittle on one’s own. I’ll check out those albums on Spotify, if they’re there.
I love Kanno’s fullbodied orchestral score for the Taiga drama ONNA JOSHU NAOTORA (2017), which I’ve mentioned in the “What are you listening to?” thread. And of course her superb “Chorale” from MEMORIES, which I mentioned in the Women in film music webcast episode in 2013. But I realize that’s a very different Kanno from the type of music on display in this franchise. Versatile composer, for sure!

Even I find that total overkill. Unless you are a die hard fan of course. Isn’t there a regular album for the old show that is already a kind of best of?
Yes, you mentioned here work before but I haven’t yet checked it out. The day has definately too few hours for all the music 😉

Mark BurgessParticipantThere are many releases, with “best of” etc. One was released with the live action remake (which did reuse the classic score, as Malte intimated). This was the only thing to do, as the original was iconic and irreplacable (something like trying to replace Vangelis in Blade Runner). The three CDs are remarkably varied, and all the tracks are short, so it’s not like trying to listen to 3 CDs of a Jerry Goldsmith or James Horner score. It’s really a unique journey.
I haven’t heard the ONNA JOSHU NAOTORA (2017) that Thor mentions. I’m going to check that out!

Was the live action score the actual music from the animated series or a newly made adapation of themes/tracks?

I have not watched the live action series, but from what I’ve heard on a soundtrack release, the music was exactly the original version.

Oh lordy mama, this score is fabulous. It really shows off her love of Ravellian tonality and deep knowledge of world music. Thanks for that recommendation!

SophieParticipantCowboy Bebop is on my list of perfect things, and the music is no small part of it. The theme is a 12-bar blues with a bridge. I prefer to think of it as rad. Those chords in the coda are about as gnarly as a thing can be.
