A composer I quite like, but I was not thrilled with the way PROJECT HAIL MARY turned out. A short review here, for anyone interested.

Pemberton is surely one of the most versatile composers currently. Funny is that my first encounter with him was his pastiche video game score THE MOVIES.

Btw, If you want to avoid this large embedded preview WordPress creates, link some text instead of using the URL directly. Same applies to Youtube videos and anything else WP can embed.

    Good point, done!

Not aware of THE MOVIES. Like many others, he burst on to the scene for me with THE MAN FROM UNCLE (2015). I’ve since really enjoyed STEVE JOBS, OCEAN’S 8, THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF OF RESISTANCE (at least part of it, once you whittle it down), MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN, WELCOME TO EARTH and BRIAN AND CHARLES.

But for SEO’s sake don’t link something generic like “here”, always link speaking text that tells something about the target. Like “here is my review of Pemberton’s score PROJECT HAIL MARY”.

THE MOVIES was already from 2005 and I think there was not actual release. What I have is a rip from the game. I think it’s on Youtube of course. Yes, I think MAN FROM UNCLE made me aware of him again like “I know that name from somewhere”. Would love him to get a Bond score actually…

That’s a lot of text to link, but I’ll try to remember that, thanks!

It must not be a full sentence always but something speaking at least the title. It’s for SEO but also for assistive tools that read text for people with sight issues. Always look at the text linked and what it says. If you isolate “here” for example the question raises to “Here what?”.

Read, and made a comment on Facebook – all in the name of discussion. 😉

He also scored 3 films for Ridley Scott, of all people.

I have “All The Money in The World”, which was very nice. Didn’t much care for the Steve Jobbs track though.

I liked his score for the TV series “The Game”, and mentioned him elsewhere as a future contender for Bond scores on the strength of that alone. He hasn’t disabused me of that yet, but then I haven’t been following him closely.

I enjoyed the film – but not as much as the book – pretty much the same feeling I had about the adaptation of The Martian. Interesting creative decisions, and some, like the ending felt like it was a bit dumbed down for more mass appeal – but it was still a good time.

The score in the film for me did not stand out. I thought it worked well enough – but I have not attempted to listen to the album yet. I have listened to snippets and it’s a more playful score to focus more on the relationships of the main characters rather than an overall theme of something greater – at least that’s how it felt to me.

I love THE MARTIAN. Needed a Ridley Scott to ground some of the comedy. Whereas in HAIL MARY there are no stops barred, not necessarily to the story’s benefit.

Pemberton made a shorter 60min playlist himself as I saw on Social Media:

Don’t have SPotify and haven’t listend to any version yet.

Cool! I hope he read my scathing review of the presentation, and acted accordingly. He, he. Doubtful. In any case, I’ll give it a go.
