This beautiful, moody, (mostly) synth score by famous Norwegian singer-songwriter Thomas Dybdahl took me completely by surprise in 2018. I didn’t know he had it in him. But in general, Dybdahl has done several film scores over his career, often for the Stavanger-based director Arild Østin Ommundsen. I interviewed him way back in 2010, when he made his film scoring debut with Ommundsen’s ROTTENETTER. Google translated version here, for anyone interested.

Trond Bjerknes conjures up a beautiful score for this 2014 children’s film (a pretty decent film, too). Broad and atmospheric, largely electronic, to capture the arctic environment. Heck, it would fit perfectly in the “Film music for freezing cold?” thread too.

Bjerknes was actually the first film composer I met. A lunch in the early 2000s, as I was working on my master thesis, and I needed to chat with him about a few things. We never met again, but have stayed in occasional touch via e-mail. He’s a talented guy who broke through while working for director Harald Zwart in the late 90s (who would later go to Hollywood for moderate success, although without his old composer comrade). But in the last decade or so, the assignments have been few, alas.

My own, curated 40-minute playlist of Ola’s score from last year, for this 6th entry in the FLÅKLYPA film series. Some lovely, funky nods to Roy Budd, mixed with folk music, orchestral adventure and everything inbetween. Recommended.

Sounds like I could like it 😉

Hildur Guðnadóttir is this year’s honorary guest at the World Soundtrack Awards, for anyone interested. Not as exciting as Trevor Jones, but there it is.
