Still not fully understanding. This topic “Forum feedback” and “Welcome …” are pinned so always the first two. All others are listed by their latest repies and appear as intended to me. As of the time of my reply:

      • The R.I.P. Thread – 15 minutes ago
      • Film music books – 19 minutes ago
      • Been to any good concerts lately? – 1 hour, 2 minutes ago

If you are loggedin you see the actual status. If not you might get a cached version that does not reflect the actual status until the cache updates. Which it does every 3600. That is counted since the last caching so individual for each page of the site. That cache is needed as the site respectively the server in general has some speed issues every now and then.

Ah! Now I understand. I “didn’t realise” that the Forum Feedback and the Welcome topics were pinned. But I’ll never forget that as long as I live.

Glad we could solve it finally 😉 The yellow background is meant to indicate the pinned status actually.

Does anyone except me occasionally experience the site / forum to hang while being logged in? It is not always but recently I often had to wait 10-15 sec until a forum post or article on the site loads, sometimes especially styles or images are broken. Same on posting on the fourm, it sometimes takes very long or I have to even repost…

Quick update to the like button feature wished several time. I might have found a suitable plugin after I figured I don’t need something for bbpress itself since a forum post is just a post. Have to try it first though.

Is it possible with less pages? Take this thread for instance, only 35 posts, but still 3 pages?

That is possible. It was set to 15 replies per page, I have raised it to 25 for now. The more per pages the slower it gets especially with lots of embed and there’s the danger of “scrolling to death” especially on mobile.

Actually I set it to 30 per page.

Whoa! A whole lotta threads got a whole lotta skinnier! “What are you listening to now?” down to a measly 19 pages. 😀

Is it possible to quote a comment when viewing the forum from a Android smartphone? I can’t see any obvious way to do it.

Yes. You just have to copy/paste the Text and put it between B-QUOTE tags in the editor.

                          #9156

One has to mark the text one wants to quote, press ‘copy’, then ‘paste’ into the new post, then mark the text again and press “B-QUOTE”.

It’s fairly easy on a laptop, but probably requires some dexterity on a phone. Here’s how to mark text on an Android, according to Google:

To mark (select) text on an Android phone, long-press (touch and hold) any word, then drag the blue cursors that appear to highlight the desired range. A menu will pop up allowing you to Copy, Share, or Select All, with app-specific options like highlighting in document editors or copying in browsers.

Basically the same as on an iPhone.

The hosting company had technical problems this evening. Sorry that the site was unavailable for a few hours. Hope it didn’t scare anyone away.

                            Thanks (via smartphone!)

On my Android devices you can also double tip on text to trigger the selection tool.

Does anyone have any tips on how to attract more members?

Send out Amer. Great salesman; he got me here.

Also, before reading this, I used the B-QUOTE function improperly. I pushed the button, and the first part of the code popped into the reply (looks sort of like >blockquote<), then I pated in some text, then above, the B-QUOTE button had changed to look like this: /B-QUOTE

I pushed it, and it filled in the end code (looks sort of like >/blockquote<)!
What an astonishingly helpful way it works for those who don’t know how it actually works.

Yeah, those tool bar buttons generates basic HTML formatting. We have to live with it as that is what this forum software offers.

But you can even write that manually without the buttons .

I just noticed something curious. I see there’s now an option to switch between English and Norwegian on the site (using Google Translate?) – which is a nice feature, of course! At least there are icons for this on Thor’s recent article about Daniel Lopatin. Using English translation, it seems everything on the site is then translated, including forum posts – which of course are already in English. So, Norwegian-looking words are translated “back” into English! For instance, in the Quincy Jones thread, I made the exclamation “Ha!” in one post, and “ha” is Norwegian for “have”. So, “Ha!” then became “Have!” 😀 Also, “Grusin” becomes “Georgian” (?!) – but only in one instance. I have no idea where that came from, because “grusin” is definitely not a Norwegian word.

Not a big issue, of course, just a curious observation. 🙂

That’s indeed using Google translation and is an experimental usage currently for that one article only. Primarily because I find the Norwegian articles problematic as I tend to pass on them and not use translate manually (which probably many others do, too). There is nothing we can do about such translation quibbles. To get the “real” Norwegian back you probably have to reload the page.

                                    #10353

Yes, I assumed it was a test feature for now. But I agree it would be great for all the non-Norwegians here. Google translate has gotten pretty good, and I couldn’t find any more of those weird English-Norwegian-English instances after skimming other posts and articles. So it’s probably nothing to worry about. 🙂

I tried to talk Thor into actually only posting English content since the film score community audience is small in general and the Norwegian one probably even more so. But I could not yet convince him yet 😉 Actutally I do understand the wish to keep things in the “native tongue” here though.

The forum (and site as a whole) is finally up again, after being down since last evening. Sorry about that, it’s the hosting company that has issues. Same issue that occured a month ago. I’ve asked them about this, and why it happens.

Glad it wasn’t me only this time. I am guessing the server couldn’t handle the requests/visits once again. The open login/register page is still the most used target according to the stats. Although we block too many attempts, lots of attempts still cause overhead. Will be interesting what they say.

In any case as announced I will finally change the caching plugin to a more “aggressive” cache soon. Maybe that helps a little.

No, no, it was the same problem for ALL their clients, not something on our end. They had service messages about it on their site. Seems to be back to normal now, although a little bit slow (but I’ve come to learn that the speed varies a lot throughout the day).

Ah, okay, good to hear! Speed variations depend on the traffic during the day. If there is spike e.g. due to login attempts it slows down. And since we are on so called “shared hosting”, meaning we share the server with multiple others client sites, it takes only one site with huge traffic or issue to slow it down for all others as well.

The forum is currently really super slow. Luckily there aren’t so many active members yet. They would probably slow it down even more.

Actually, right now it’s super fast again. As we alluded to earlier, the speed varies a lot over the course of a day.
