This is basically a playlist thread.

Choose no more than 15 tracks by ONE AND ONLY ONE COMPOSER pr. post that are their own “full” compositions, in a way. Try not to make them all main or end titles or montages.

Here’s my Jerry Goldsmith Setpiece track, for example:

Or just one. Any piece that is not “Main Titles” or “End Titles”, but standalone dramatic tracks that have a self-sufficient quality, like an independent mini composition. Williams has loads.

Interesting topic. I know what you mean… not “Main or End Titles”, as these are just basically always played standalone in concerts, they are the “hits” of film music, but you’re referring to cues that could just stand on their own, without being embedded into the larger composition.
I remember 25 years ago in rec.music.movies I said that exact thing about “Toccata & Dreamscapes” from Elliot Goldenthal’s FINAL FANTASY score. That’s just a self contained concert piece. (Of course, it also works embedded into the album structure.) Or Jerry Goldsmith’s “The Hijacking (Parts I & II)” from AIR FORCE ONE, I wish that play that in concerts!
But I have to watch the game now and can’t search or think of more at this time.

On the THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK OST every track is a setpiece.

Yes, some OSTs have plenty of them, but more often it’s just one or two standout tracks.

This is actually less “work” than you think. Just pick a random composer, and look at his or her work in a given time frame. Then choose the highlight tracks – the self-contained mini compositions – that are not main or end titles.

For example, James Newton Howard. From WATERWORLD, one could choose three – “Escaping the Smokers”, “The Bubble” and “Swimming”. But if only one, then “Swimming”. Also, “Tarawa” from SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS, “The Egg Travels” from DINOSAUR, “The Crystal Chamber” from ATLANTIS, “The Hand of Fate (Part 1)” from SIGNS, “The Gravel Road” from SIGNS, “Love and Suffering” from A HIDDEN LIFE. Etc.

Talking about setpieces. This one from Isham’s BLACK DAHLIA is great.

And this score has so many great tracks. The movie didn’t deserve that score.

There is “The Attack” from The Blue Max by Jerry Goldsmith, which actually has been performed as a stand alone piece several times.
