How do we get more activity here?

I was wondering if any of you (the handful of you!) have any suggestions on how to increase activity here? Maybe if you know about some people that would be good here, from your own circle, or other messageboards, that you could recommend?
I did spend some time awhile back, inviting people via mail or Facebook, but alas most of them have decided not to partake (for what reason, I do not know, and I’d rather not speculate). I also don’t want to post more ‘plugs’ on other messageboards than I already have. Maybe if someone other than me talked about it, it would be better.
Any tips appreciated!

Yes, we talked about it privately, but I wanted to open it up here. I might think and ponder reasons myself, but there can be all kinds of reasons for why they’ve refused.
I know guys like Tim Partridge find a message board like this a relic from the past in 2026.
I have no idea how to increase activity here, I must admit.
For those of you who participated in the Zoom chats during covid, do you know how to get hold of Thomas – you know, the Irish guy? I’d really like to invite him here, but I’ve not been able to find his contact information.

Yes, that’s him. I tried to send him a PM on FSM, but he has not responded. In fact, I don’t think he has logged in since the board rebooted. I don’t know his last name, so hard to look him up on other social media as well.
I want to apologize for the excessive posting I’m doing on this forum, especially during the weekends. It’s a bit like Zooba is currently doing on FSM, and it irritates me a bit. So I can only imagine what I do irritates you as well. But if I don’t, the board dies in a week.
Recommendations of people to invite aren’t really flooding in at the moment, but again — would be thankful for any tips regarding people on JWFAN, FSM, Maintitles or other forums that you could picture here.
I don’t know. I’m here today, for a few moments. Maybe discussion per se is dying out across the planet.
I am not convinced that the key to more activity in the forum is a higher number of registered users.
I would rather vote for proposals for a more responsive and interactive conversation and discussion culture.Thor is really my role model here like he is proposing topics and responding to comments. In the end that is what makes the quality of an online community. Of course it is a matter of time on our hands.
I mentioned, I miss the like Button here. But maybe this is also a chance of developing a better art of conversation.
Just a thought. Maybe something we can discuss a little at the upcoming ZOOM-session.
I agree. We don’t need a LOT more people. I think 10 more active people would be enough, really. Just enough that we can wake up every morning and find a handful of new replies, to get that little dose of film score disussion every day, inbetween other duties. That’s it. But finding those 10 has proven more difficult than I anticipated (I mean, there are 50 registerered users here, but only a handful of them are active).
Of course I realize it’s different for most of you, who are also active on other boards. You get your dose elsewhere.

As mentioned on the “Forum feeback” topic recently I fould a plugin that maybe could provide that. Just have to find the time to actually investigate if and how I can implement that.

Sadly always the usual number that only a few are active. I run an mailing group – sort of forum and mailing list combined if you know these – for illustrators and while we have 160+ members (at hight times it were over 300 years ago) only the usuale 12-20 are actually active. I have given up to worry about that years ago. It’s just how people work. You can probably ask any association or club and will get similar numbers, especially when voluntary duty positions are to be set 😉
Just an update on this:
I’ve now done pretty much everything I can to up the activity here. I’ve invited a lot of my favourite film score people, via mail, Facebook or PMs. Some have registered, some have not. A couple have posted once or twice, many have not. I’m guessing many lurk, or are simply not interested. And of course I also post a lot myself (too much!) to keep it alive. If I don’t, it dies within a week.
The “ideal” I hope for is to see an average of 10 new posts every day, for a lively, healthy forum. That’s not really out-of-reach, I think, when you think that that’s the amount of new posts on FSM or JWFAN within 10 minutes. But we’re not there yet.
I have one final trick up my sleeve: The ressurection of the Zoom chats. Maybe some 5 sessions first, to see how it does. I’m just waiting for my health to improve a little bit, and also finding someone with a Premium Zoom account I can borrow, so we don’t have to log off and on every 40 minutes. “Silent member” Bregt might help me out here, we’ll see.
Finally, I might require some help from the existing members. Not to be PR people all over the place, that’s too big an ask. But for example, if you discuss something on another board and then say “we actually talked a bit about this on the Celluloid Tunes board”, maybe with link, then that might help. Just a mention that comes from someone other than me. If you want, of course. No pressure.

This is still a quite high goal even first that there are well established forum like FMS and jwfan already and second forums are a bit out of fashion. There must be a good reason to yet again sign onto another forum when you have limited time and are already on two.
As you know I am lurker on the others as I hardly have the time and motiviation to post on several. Or even on one. I try here because I am involved but it certainly eats time.

That’s not a bad quote actually for 64 users. It is always the same that only a few will be active. As I mentioned I am running another forum, basically a mixture of forum and mailing list, with now 160+ members. Only around 15-20 are regulary active. Most never do anything and since it is via mail primarily probably don’t even lurk ( = don’t read any mails since they already get loads of other mails and other platforms to look at). It was not even different when some years ago there were 320+ members.

Really? I don’t think it’s that outlandish a goal. I mean, I’m not comparing us to mastodont messageboards like FSM and JWFAN with thousands of members, many of whom have been there for 20+ years, and probably 100 active users, minimum. But if they can muster up 10 new posts in 10 minutes, surely we can muster up 10 a day. I don’t know, I remain optimistic for now. Time will show if this quaint pub on the corner (compared to the large discos that are FSM and JWFAN etc.) have the right of life. 🙂

I am sorry but I am just less optimistic or let’s call it more realistic 😉 The forum has to get its standing and nowadays with competition on lots of channels that takes time. It’s not open again for even year I think.
Post more about topics on Facebook where the older guys like us are still maybe, too 😉 Although the algorithm will likey interfere…

Well, it is comparing and it is the same problem. They have thousands of members that also don’t participate much but due to the number the few look like more activity.
There is German board that is lucky to have a handful of posts per day and has the exact same problems. (Yes, I am part of it as I only lurk there as well…)
Maybe more quantity than here. But quality?

Facebook ist a good comparison. I am there in several soundtrack groups with much more activity. Sometimes I read some posts there. But I would never start a conversation there. I think, the two comments that I ever posted there never got any recognition apart from a few like by people I don’t know. I find these groups quite anonymous.
I like our cozy little group here. But I understand you, Thor, that you feel permanently on duty to reanimate this prefinal patient of a forum. That shouldn’t be so much depending on you only.
Looking forward to the Zoom session, if it ever takes place.

That would be great, but I don’t expect it. My biggest wish is to lay back and participate only when I feel like it (I’m so friggin’ tired of my own voice here, and I think it irritates others as well), but we’re not there yet.

Yeah, I agree to that. And I don’t like Facebook for that, too. I am not even actively lurking in any group actually. Just sometimes when I use the standard feed I see posts from the FSM, Intrada ones or so.

I’ve pretty much run out of things to say about the wacky world of soundtracks. Most of my musings on FSM (the only other board I bother with) receive the odd daft comment from Damian or a pedantic reply from one of the humourless know-it-alls. It has become a bit zooba crazy at the moment.
Yes, it’s odd that Thomas (Odd Thomas?) has completely split the scene.
This is my first post here.
Maybe I will appreciate the intimacy of this place a bit more?
