    FSM # 2: January 8, 2001

You’re thinking: “What? Another one of those goddamn personal questions? Will this guy never stop? What’s next? Our personal credit card number?!”

I know that some of you (especially you, Dutch?) find this utterly boring, a waste of space, but to me – starved as I am of film music-interested friends in real life – this is all part of my “constructing faces out of internet handles”. As you might remember from previous incarnations of this theme on previous incarnations of this board, I have already asked you how old you are, where you live and what you do for a living?

Now I’m curious about the following:

What are your physical surroundings: Do you live in a house? An apartment? A student’s dorm? If you live in a house, do you have a separate room for soundtrack listening?

Secondly, what PEOPLE share your surroundings: Do you have kids running around, making it hard to consentrate on the music? Do you have a wife/husband/companion or flatmates/neighbours who do not respect/share your interest, forcing you to adjust the volume accordingly?

    Things like that.

I think people would be more willing to share in threads such as this if they were visible only to those who are logged in.

You could of course answer very generally so you don’t expose too much “the net” doesn’t know already anyway 😉 But good idea. On the next ocasion I will take a look if this forum plugin does allow private topics for members only. Might be that we need a separate subforum for that.

Just looked: It is not possible to restrict a topic. Weindeed would need to setup a separate forum that is set to “not public”.

Probably no need for a private sub forum, as we’re only, like, 5 active members here in the first place (out of the 50 registered).

I respect not wanting to share personal details. It’s just been something that has interested me for many years, as the post from the year 2000 above attests to. Kind of an informal pub atmosphere where one talks about anything and everything. And especially when it relates to this weird hobby of ours, like having separate listening rooms or planning one’s realization of said hobby around domestic logistics.

Personally, I live by myself in a tiny one-room apartment, so little need to adapt. Except maybe to keep the volume down so as not to bother neighbours. Then again, I have some noisy neighbours (the one above me is currently refurbishing, for example, with endless drilling and noise), so as far as THEM is concerned, I wouldn’t feel guilty. The one next to me and below me, however, is another question.

I just made this short clip, just a live take with my phone, no editing, no nothing, it’s me tonight listening to some music, not even sure how it will sound (it’s just done with a phone on the fly), my dogs chill with me tonight on the sofa. They don’t seem to mind the music.
It’s as private as can be, as it’s literally just a few seconds old, live tonight and right out of our living room, so it’s not a public video and just to satisfy Thor’s curiosity, but that’s how I unwind at the weekend, listening to some music, maybe some wine later…

That’s beautiful, Nick, thanks for sharing! I’m not a dog person, but that looks perfectly tranquil, with the purple light and everything. What music is that playing?

Oh, and love your book sculpture in the background.

Good idea. I have a roof above my head, maybe even walls around me, and may or may not have other people in the household.

    What music is that playing?

It’s Carter Burwell. I just recently discovered this composer series with recordings from Belgium, so I try to listen to them all (they are all available as streamung/download/CD)

It’s ‘In Bruges’: Prologue / Medieval Waters by Carter Burwell from this album.

Thought there was something familiar. I have that album. Thanks!

Oh, my. Kinsinger and I treated your earnest inquiry as a straight line to be met by our tag-team brand of messageboard wit. We could really launch into it at the slightest provocation. Took the edge off of all the serious posts and replies that were so plentiful back in them early days. Unfortunately, it was done at your expense in that thread!

He, he. Yeah, it happens/happened. But I’m guessing your living situation has changed since 2001? Cross-country moves, hurricanes, what-have-you. Hopefully, all your precious albums survived.

You guessed well. Still have the album collection, buried both elderly parents, am now in the “elderly” living situation myself having qualified for the USA version of gov’t. health care and pension (the latter inadequate on its own, caramba!). And all the hobbyist writing about film music over 2+ decades seems to have energized me into recently completing a two-volume memoir about growing up in the 60s-early 70s followed by amateur baseball coaching that carried into the 80s and 90s. Before film music took over!
