Were the specials shown in other countries? If so, did the export versions retain Guaraldi’s music? Was the Charlie Brown Christmas album a holiday staple anyplace outside of the States?

Growing up in Liverpool, England from 1965 onwards, I don’t recall ever seeing the cartoon being shown on UK TV.
It might have been a Saturday morning thing later on (?) but the shows I recall watching as a kid were stuff like Marine Boy, The Singing Ringing Tree and various UK/BBC shows like Capt Pugwash and the Gerry Anderson shows…Thunderbirds/Capt Scarlett/JOE-90 etc.
Or did you mean Christmas period stuff? It was never a Xmas staple in England, to my memory.

It was fairly popular in Norway as a comic book, under the name “Knøttene”. Especially in newspaper strips. But Charlie Brown (Baltus Brun in Norwegian) wasn’t the hero, that was Snoopy the dog. He was the REAL popular character over here.

That being said, I have no memory of ever seeing the animated version on Norwegian television. But then I’m a child of the 80s. Maybe some of you older Norwegians remember it from the 70s? Nils?

I’ve noticed, on FSM and elsewhere, that the animated version and the scores are massive in the US. I’ve long wanted to explore the music, even without having any connection to the series, but I’ve never gotten around to it. Like so many things.

I’ve known them since childhood, PEANUTS was quite popular.
I consider “Linus & Lucy” a true classic, one of the most charming pieces ever written for television. I love it.

Like Nic I also know them from my childhood. Both from TV and a comic strips in newspapers and found them very popular. I think they still are well know. No idea if the albums were hits, I had none in my childhood. Probably I didn’t know they exist 😉

Ahhhh, yes I remember it more, from my childhood, as a short comic strip in the daily newspaper my Dad would buy and bring into the house.
I have always assumed it was a very American thing.

But Doc, since you brought it up — you have a special connection to this, no? I know there’s a good selection of this music out there — could you steer us in any direction in regards to albums or tracks where we can get the “gist” of it?

I just looked and I have a Greatest Hits album (only) that probably gives a good roundup. I also have the Christophe Beck score from the more recent remake. The 3D part was not necessary but generally worked better than I expected.

Thanks, all! As I surmised. 🥂
