KeymasterSo what do you think about it? I generally like Tiomkin a lot but this was not a top priority one actually. I do understand that the name “Hitchcock” attached might be helpful for promotion. Sadly – well, my budget likes it generally 🙂 – I won’t be able to contribute since Kickstarter offers no payment way I can use.

KeymasterHere’s the campaign, for those not in the know: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/129145902/dial-m-for-murder-film-score-recording?ref=created_projects
Tiomkin and/or DIAL M FOR MURDER is fine, but not really something I crave or have any particular desire to contribute towards. If, however, someone decides to release anything COMPLETELY unreleased that I want, I’d consider contributing — stuff like STORY OF A WOMAN (Williams), ALCOA PREMIERE THEATRE (Williams), TOP GUN, SCARFACE. Anything unreleased by Elfman and Goldenthal. But I doubt that’s ever going to happen.

KeymasterDIAL M FOR MURDER probably can be seen as unreleased in general. But I also prefer completely unreleased things. Sadly it’s a business and they have to do what actually sells. The two Williams would be nice (the song to STORY is quite unusual Williams I think) and ALOCA would make a good compilation, all the main titles alone. TOP GUN and SCARFACE had sort of releases, don’t they?

KeymasterTrue. I meant score-only releases in those cases. Same with FLETCH. It’s getting a reissue soon, but it’s just the songtrack. Not a score-only, alas.

ParticipantIt is interesting to see how Kickstarter campaigns have developed in the intervening years since this topic started.
I think the debacle of the Jerry Goldsmith books and its Kickstarter campaign has severely dented confidence. But, I think that they are a good way of helping projects along to fruition. (I am a contributor to the Goldsmith books thing but it hasn’t put me off Kickstarter.)
A lot of people want something in return when the contribute money to a Kickstarter rather than providing funds to help a project get off the ground. For me, there’s a couple of Kickstarter projects I supported but, in the end, didn’t really enjoy the end results. But I am still glad that I contributed to it so that the project happened. I didn’t demand my money back.

KeymasterYes, the Goldsmith book and the Young/NOSFERATU project all got into trouble. The former moreso than the latter.
Fortunately for me, I never had the money to partake anyway, but I feel bad for those who did. I see now that Lukas wants to Kickstart a new FSM page as well.

ParticipantI couldn’t understand the problem with the Nosferatu release. People would get their copy when it was sent out. Who cares if it’s after the people who bought it via general sale.
The whole point of supporting it was to ensure its release and not to get a copy before anyone else!

KeymasterI think it was mostly people in Canada not getting their CD(?), but I think it’s slowly starting to arrive there now too.
Like you, I always also thought it was supporting the project that mattered, not that you would get the product before anyone else.

KeymasterI took part the Nosferatu one and being in Germany did get the CD right to the New Year. A bit nuts it was primarily because I literally paid double for the CD including postage and custom that even was produce in Germany…
It didn’t really put me off of Kickstarters and I did took part in Leigh Philips Goldsmith ones, too. I might not choose the physical CD anymore though…
Like you, I always also thought it was supporting the project that mattered, not that you would get the product before anyone else.
Yes, generally I agree as well. But it is by now expected “common best pratice” that you get a “benefit” by supporting it.

ParticipantMalte, I agree that there is an expectation to receive a benefit. Incentives certainly attract donations, perhaps more money from people who want a particular perk.
With me saying that it’s the donation that truly matters, this viewpoint of mine would be severely tested if a project that I am very passionate about and would donate thousands (I can dream!) but the perk for thousands of dollars/euros/pounds came with an invite to recording sessions in the US that I couldn’t possibly attend!

KeymasterAnd now there’s a new one featuring Goldsmith’s THE CHAIRMAN. Will be interesting to see how that progresses.

KeymasterThis will surely be a success and I probably can’t help to not help it 😉
