I recently added Navidrome as a streaming server to my setup , which means I can now access my music collection on the go from any place in the world that’s got Internet connection — without any subscription fees! (Navidrome is an Open Source Project.) Nifty. (On the go, I use now Symfonium as my music player of choice, which became quickly my favorite Android music player after I tried it out a couple of weeks ago.)
That sounds like a cool gadget.
Meanwhile, I’m struggling with all things not on physical media.
Like, more iTunes qualms: After spending a great deal of time importing all my music to iTunes 12, then realizing I wanted an earlier version, I re-installed 11.4 and imported again. Then I realized it was 11.0 or 11.2 I needed – the one I was used to before the crash (I hadn’t memorized which version I had, sadly). 11.4 weirdly omitted things like having a “top shelf” with recently added albums, which is absolutely crucial for me so I know which albums to back up. So now I need to downgrade to an even earlier version at some point. Ugh!
For a minute, I thought to myself — just get MusicBee and get it over with. But then I remembered that I have an old iPod that I hope to connect to my laptop at some point, and I probably need iTunes for that.
Why must everything be so difficult?
Whoa, I can imagine that that’s annoying. Well, I don’t have to imagine, I know it’s annoying when computers won’t do what you want them to do. That’s the main reason I know so much about them, so I can make them do what I want to do.
However, I have (and have for quite some time) the strict philosophy of separating the “software” from my files. So whenever I change software, I just “direct” it to my files and it works. Mostly at least.
You seem to be very set on an older version of iTunes, which I admit has the nice color effects which the newer one doesn’t, but relying on out of date or older version software is of course always a perilous path, one I don’t dare to take myself. That works good with the files itself with iTunes/Apple Music as long as you don’t have playlists.

Agree to that. Best always try to use the latest possible on the computer.

This could be, of course. But since I don’t use iTunes to actually play music, I don’t have any playlists in iTunes at all. The playlists I do have are all in “*.m3u8” format and device independent.

So should cut down time somewhat if I re-install an older iTunes, or install MusicBee (which can read iTunes library files). But of course still a hassle. Right now, I’m in the process of “cleaning up” my collection of some 3000+ albums (whittling down certain albums, removing titles that should only be on my back-up, not on my hard drive, and so on).
Maybe one day, I’ll get up to snuff to Nick’s fancy-schmanzy solutions! 😀

Files only on the backup are not a backup of course 😉 You really also need to get a proper backup solution that does incremental backups of only new or changed files. Saves so much time to do the frequent importand backups.
