55-year-old Japanese composer Naoki Satō had his proper international breakthrough with GODZILLA MINUS ONE last year – a fine score within a Goldenthal-ian spirit, but not the “Second Coming” that people made it out to be.
Personally, I discovered him in 2012 with his excellent score for UNMEI NO HITO, especially with that wild, beefed-up classical pastiche main theme. Three other recommendations since then are MORIBITO: GUARDIAN OF THE SPIRIT (2016), KYOJO (2020) and MASQUERADE NIGHT (2021).
Not been that thrilled with his last few scores, but I’m constantly exploring his work — even all these years later. So any recommendations would be welcome.
