This is a composer I completely happened upon by chance.
I picked up the film score CD ‘Nowhere In Africa’ for about £1 or £2, on a whim, many many years ago in a 2nd hand shop, and really enjoyed some/most of the tracks.
Fast forward to quite recently and I had a CD in my basket at Discogs, but I needed to add something else to qualify for posting to England, and I noticed another CD by Niki Reiser (Beyond Silence) so I bought it, thus doubling my Niki Reiser CD collection.
Then, I googled the composer and was surprised to read that this Swiss born/German based composer is one of the most respected and successful film/TV composers of the past few decades, with lots and lots of scores and albums out there (mainly for German productions).
Any folks here aware of him and/or his music scores?

It’s one of those names I’ve sometimes encountered, and probably also sampled, while listening my way through oodles of new scores every year (have to admit, I thought he was a she), but nothing so far that has made me halt and take notice. But your post might be a nudge to do so!

Yes, he is a very familar name over here but I am not really familiar with him. “Beyond Silence” is the only CD I have by him and it is a lovely score and also probably his most famous one.

I also picked up a cheap CD last week on eBay, which translates from German as The Flying Classroom. Some of it is really lovely too. He has a nice light touch which reminds me of Dave Grusin crossed with David Newman. I will be on the lookout for other bargains by him.

“The Flying Classroom” is a classic German children’s book that had several film versions. Just in case you wanted to know 😉

Thanks Malte. It looks very ‘kiddie’ from the look/style on the CD cover/booklet.
The music is nice though. Lightweight and knockabout, but warmly thematic and orchestral. Worth the few Euros I spent on it.

I’ve always been a sucker for film scores that meld world/tribal style music within the standard orchestral setting, and these cues made me sit up and think ‘yeah’ when I first got the Nowhere In Africa soundtrack CD, all those years ago…

I think I saw that movie but don’t remember much of it or the score. I really need to explore Reise a bit. Btw, the youtube videos don’t work for me as “being not available”.
