I was always somehow impressed that three guys (one of whom was famous as a director, not a composer) were able to make this super elegant, sensual, fullbodied orchestral score when it came out in 2006. It sounded too unified as a vision to be by three different people, I thought. And to be performed by the Berlin Philharmonic and Simon Rattle, no less! Clearly, this was something special.

In 2012, in Krakow, I attended a live-to-picture concert of the film with the composers present (well, at least Tykwer and Heil, didn’t see Klimek). Live-to-picture concerts, as we discussed in this thread, was and is not my thing, but it did cement my opinion of the score as one of the best of the 2000s.

I neither saw the movie nor heard the score… Have to admit Heil & Klimek never did much to me (always wonder how much Tykwer actually does here). Intnerestingly Heil was quite active in poprock and TV long before LOLA RENNT already. Maybe this score is an exception.

I like the score better than the movie. I am absolutely no fan of narration in movies. But in such a movie which is so much about sensual experience I found the narration unforgivable and annoying.

The score is nice, but somehow very transparent. Many good ideas but very obviously surpriselessly executed. But it might also be a matter of inflated expectations on my end to a score recorded with the Berlin Philharmonic.

My CD has a different cover by the way.

Yes, I was surprised to see that alternate cover when I searched for it online. I have to say that the original one that I have (pictured in the first post), is far superior.

I think they talked about who did what in the press conference during the Krakow festival in 2012, but I can’t remember any of it. Before this film, I wasn’t even aware that Tykwer had a musical education.

Irritatingly, I sold off my CD, but thankfully kept the files.

Oh, copyright violation 😉 But anyone without sin should throw the first stone 😉

So it is illegal to sell used CDs? 😳

It’s technically illegal to sell the CD and keep the digital version you once ripped from it, I suppose. I should have deleted the files when I sold the CD. But of course, we’ve all done this many, many times. We’ve all kept copies of stuff.
