They’re on my top 10 film composers list of all time (yes, I’m aware they’re not ONLY film composers, but they’ve done enough to qualify….you’ll also find Giorgio Moroder and Vangelis on that list, so there!). I’ve previously done a podcast episode on them, and just now, Jon Aanensen has published a thorough filmography of their work that is well worth a read.

While I like RUBYCON and STRATOSFEAR from the 70s, I’m primarily a fan of their work from TANGRAM in 1980 to ca. the mid 90s. Some good stuff before and after, but it’s primarily that period I dig. They almost couldn’t do anything wrong then.

Favourite soundtrack? Oooh, tough call. Maybe THE KEEP, with SHY PEOPLE a second and MIRACLE MILE a third.

What’s your favourite, or general estimation of their work?

Just saw the filmography. Nice one! Two small additions for the 80s TATORT episodes here as it seems to fit. The episodes are:

1982 Das Mädchen auf der Treppe (ala “White Eagle”)
Tracks including the theme from the episode had a rare single release:
    https://www.discogs.com/de/release/2500198-Tangerine-Dream-Das-M%C3%A4dchen-Auf-Der-Treppe
Of course the title track of the album “White Eagle” is the theme although in a different arrangement. No idea what was first… But not the first time the “adapted” things vice versa.

    1983 Miriam
The tracks “Daydream” and “Moorland” had a rare single relase:
    https://www.discogs.com/de/release/771390-Tangerine-Dream-Daydream (Youtube links there)

It should also be noted that all epsiodes include the 1991 one note separately feature the cult investigator duo Schimanksi (played by Götz George) and Thanner. For those who don’t know: TATORT is not a classic series in total. There are varying investigators in different cites as kind of sub series within the series based in a different city (as produced by different local broadcasters.

My favorite era is mid 70s to mid 80s and there is als good stuff in the 90s. But after ROCKOON I think I lost a bit of interest in them…

    Favourite scores probably:
    – SHY PEOPLE (generally for me one of their best scores)
    – THIEF (with ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA one of my first CDs ever)
    – FIRESTARTER (like that rather dreamy and totally non horror vibe)
    – FLASHPOINT

Special mention STREET HAWK. I would love to have a best of – as it is primarily the theme – of that show. Also an addition to the filmography. The title track of the album LE PARC is the theme in a rather weirdly stripped down version.

Thanks for the comments. I’ll let Jon comment on it, and if we need to make some changes.

I love STREET HAWK. Shame there isn’t a better release. But I’ve played Giuliano Pilati’s “remix” album STREET HAWK ADVENTURES from 2007 a lot over the years.

Sure its up to Jon if we wants to do edits.

I love STREET HAWK. Shame there isn’t a better release.

Yeah, one of the many themes I even taped back then 😉 Btw the youtube video in the article IMHO not an official version. The LE PARC version of the album does not have those drums. Not sure what this is, might be a cover. This is the actual album version:

And I believe thos is the rare single version with a different arrangement again:

But I’ve played Giuliano Pilati’s “remix” album STREET HAWK ADVENTURES from 2007 a lot over the years.

I know that and also the 2nd album. Better than nothing 😉

Yes, many different versions. With 70+ albums, TD is a jungle to get lost in.

It’s a bit frustrating that so many of the old members are still around (Franke, Baumann, Schmoelling, Haslinger etc.), so although Froese is dead, they could theoretically come together and do something again. But they’ve opted not to, for various reasons, and it will never happen. We’re stuck with the “new guys” instead, none of whom have a connection to the golden years.

I can understand it actually, they are past their TD time for decades already.

Yes, although they retain sound signatures in newer recordings and have the bessing of Froese’s widow. To me Froese was clearly the core of TD and I would have put the band to rest and continue with another name maybe still playing TD tracks. But of course the name is also a brand.

Tangerine Dream has released a vast amount of music, with over 100 studio albums and numerous live, compilation, and soundtrack releases, totaling hundreds of official recordings across decades of prolific output, making pinpointing a single number difficult, but certainly well over 100 albums. Their official discography includes 109 live/studio albums, 78 compilations, and 36 soundtracks, among many other formats.

But your favourite, Jon, your FAVOURITE?

Very hard to say, but I’ll be original and say DEAD SOLID PERFECT is my favourite TD soundtrack.

That’s indeed an unusal and original choice as I find this one of all scores I know the most fragmentaric and inconsistent. The main theme is nice though. I had theCD once but parted with it.

    #6967

Interesting choice. I own it, and it’s good, but it’s never featured anywhere near my top 10 TD. Will give it another go soon, as I approach TD in my collection walkthrough (I’m still at “R”).

By the way, I’ve been listening my way through the clips that Jon provided in the filmography – those titles I wasn’t already familiar with, at least. It’s been an interesting journey. I’m not a big fan of listening to long-track audio rips complete with sound effects and dialogue (or film clips), so some of them, I had to skip around a bit (of course, it’s the only way to hear these, I’m aware of that). But also some cool new discoveries. I was struck again by how gorgeous that “Das Mädchen auf der Treppe” theme is (although that German talk show host that introduced the live performance was rather annoying and intrusive). And dug VISION QUEST, the dark, almost Russian anthem-style undercurrent of RED HEAT, the catchiness of CANYON DREAMS, the almost erotica-infused style of that 90s TATORT episode and the versatile OASIS, just there at the tailend of my favourite TD period.

Yeah, great them. “White Eagle” was my first album by them actually. they actually play the album version named “White Eagle”. The film version has a different lead synth often:

If you like to see it in context here is the full epsiode unless blocked. TD even got the end credits which most of the time has just Doldinger’s theme:

(although that German talk show host that introduced the live performance was rather annoying and intrusive).

He was a quite famous over here and did in those earlier days lots of music shows with things rarely seen in German TV if I recall right. Later he did a pure talk show and also a cooking show combined with that.

Didn’t manage to get through all samples but will try some time later. A few I didn’t know about.

Good to hear that you found some new favorites, Thor.

Yay! I’ve finally reached Tangerine Dream in my walkthrough. Will spend the next few days, maybe a week (at least), going through my TD collection chronologically – starting with this bootleg of rarities that I got in the early 2000s. The tracks were initially untitled, so Jon and others helped me identify the pieces (no Shazam for these!):

If you like to specify the TATORT tracks a little more:

    – “Katja” is from the TATORT episode “Das Mädchen auf der Treppe” (there are actually two more tracks, “Flock” (sometimes “Flock Of Bluebirds”) and “Speed (sometimes “Speed Dragon”), from that episode besides the main theme you seem not to have)
    – “Moorland” and “Daydream” are from the TATORT episode “Miriam”

    Thanks!

I wonder how the TD music is in the Tatort episode Heisser Schnee from 1984.

Is that supposed to have original TD music? I only know of the three episodes noted on your filmography. German tv movies are often heavily tracked with existing music – without notes in the on screen credits – as the public broadcasters have a GEMA flatrate to use anything (to my knowledge).

But probably we know how in general how it might sound from that year 😉 I’ll keep an eye if that episode is ever re-broadcasted.

A guy on Facebook says there is indeed no original music in the episode.

You can see the episode on youtube.

I only quickly peak and for some weird reasons thought the rip to not have sound then. Around 17:50 there is some promineent TD which naturally sounds familiar like things around that time. But I cannot place where it might be tracked from.

The wikipedia entry also lists some Bernd Decker and Mel von der Decken as music credits who I never heard of. Sadly the rip does not have the credits because normally any original composer should have been listed there. Just track music is never. This often makes verifiy if someone really.

Someone posted a really huge filmography here https://www.tangerinedream-music.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?t=4029 which also includes that episide as original music as it specifially notes tracked music usages.

We all know how inacurate imdb usually is but its soundtrack section lists two tracks from Froese solo album which I don’t know:

The last track on that rarities compilation is so fascinating…that they sounded like this BEFORE they went abstract and electronic:

That is THE ONES, not TD though.

This is the real “Ultima Thule” track – I think a remixed version though – from the early years that still sounds like a pychedelic rock band:

    This one sounds rougher:

Yeah, all the first four albums sound quite different from the “actual TD sound” beginning wiht PHAEDRA (if I recall right).

    #7727

I’ve gone on record before to say that my TD love starts with TANGRAM in 1980. But I like RUBYCON and STRATOSFEAR from the 70s (no SORCERER, sorry), and I’m fascinated by their early days, when they were more blues, prog rock, krautrock.

FORCE MAJEURE from 1979 is good too.
