This was a popular feature during Covid. I think I hosted 20 of them, all in all, with peeps from FSM and Maintitles in particular. One with JWFAN. Then they died out, for various reasons, mostly to do with things in my own situation. But also the end of Covid etc.

But I’m willing to give them another chance now, if there’s any interest.

I’m thinking of doing a “test run” on Friday, July 17 – at 18:00 (6PM) Norway time. I checked, there are no World Cup matches this evening. I don’t have a Premium Zoom account, and can’t afford one, so for the time being it will be like it used to be in the old days: We reboot every 40 minutes! Then I might work behind the scenes to find some sort of alternative, limitless solution if it’s something we want to continue.

Would anyone be up for that?

I’m open to Teams. Gives us 60 minutes instead of 40. But I think more people have Zoom ready to go.

I also would try to chime in (not sure if any one really wants to hear me speak English ;)). I have used Zoom, GoTo, Google Meet (also has a 60 min limit) and indeed Teams which was the only one I had some problems (no video or audio) with though. I don’t have any even free account for any of these myself. As far as I know there is no free unlimted solution.

Signal also has group video calls but I neither have used those nor found if there are time limits.

No, Mac user here 😉 (Although that has a Unix core ;-))

I did try the free platform Jitsi Meet once (which has unlimited time), but it caused all kinds of issues, so never again. Everyone had to re-group on Zoom that time.

Jitsi I never tried but video causes quite some overhead and if many use that for free…

Yes. Maybe go “safe” with Zoom the first time, and then maybe try Teams next, if there is interest.

Be sure to bring some nice beverages! Beer or wine, or non-alcoholic if that’s the way you swing. Since this is a ‘trial run’, I won’t be ordering specialty beers from the wine monopoly this time, but I’ll have something in hand.

If it’s a success, and it’s something we want to repeat, I have another one planned for mid August, when I’m at our summer house in Denmark (those of you who partook in the earlier chats, will remember that I did one from there in 2022).

I was not aware that UK is an hour behind. I just checked to be sure but yes I am really in the same time zone as Oslo 🙂

Yes, I’m sorry for the Americans. 18:00 Oslo time is 9:00 Los Angeles time, for example, which – on a Friday – means the time they’re probably arriving at work in the morning. In the past, we’ve kept it going to about midnight, maybe 1:00, so some Americans can tune in in the afternoon, but no guarantee for that now.

As I said, this is just a “test run”. Next time, if there is a next time, we might move it to a Saturday, and start at 19:00 or 20:00 instead.

My laptop’s HDD drive has decided to crash today, of all days. It’s constantly «checking», trying to repair disc errors etc. in the startup and has been doing so for a few hours now, with no sign of finishing. In a weird coincidence, I have a backup laptop, my dad’s, that I haven’t returned to him yet. So I’ll be using that if the problem persists.

Two weeks ago, so not too bad. But still annoying.

I’m sweating like a madman, trying to re-install Windows via an USB drive and BIOS intervention and what-have-you (Google AI comes in handy sometimes!), but I don’t think there’s any way to save it. And just a week before I’m off until September, where PC is crucial.

But oh well, I’ll try not to let that affect our meeting. I still have my dad’s laptop, which I’m using at the moment. Zoom has been installed.

thx99 was kind enough offer his Premium Zoom account for our meeting, which means there will be no 40-minute reboots. He promised he would offer up a link shortly before we start at 18:00.
