Ach, ye’re such a hurdy gurdy wi’ yer footie, Kev. How do you know there’s even gonna be a next Zoom? Thor, when’s the next one?

      #13549

No idea. Might be a month or two. Look to the east, as the crow flies high and the leaves have turned.

Thanks for another nice chat, everyone!

Goldsmith (is ANGIE and ALONG CAME A SPIDER good or rubbish?)

Yes, there was an interesting exchange of differing opinions regarding ALONG CAME A SPIDER, as well as EXPLORERS. But all done in a civilized manner, without the bickering this probably would have led to on certain other message boards. 😉

That was fun! I realized that it’s probably been a few years since I was engaged in a lengthy film music conversation. Thanks, all!

First of all, it was October, a rare month for boys.

These Zoom meeting are really nice. Sorry, I sneaked away so early. Didn’t want to Interrupt the conversation.

There was one question that I still wanted to ask but didn’t manage to.
I have seen that the score for Jaws The Revenge is available again. Is it any good? Didn’t pay attention during the movie. Was just too shocked and paralysed by the garbage going on on screen.

I only have a digital version of apparently the short composer promo. Been a while I listened to it but according to my memory it is okay and although I think there are new themes by Small Williams’ themes are still very present. Others probably have more detailed knowledge.

Thanks Malte! I remember somehow watching a Youtube video about Stravinsky temp tracks for Jaws 4 which seemed quite evident.

Hi Gerate (may I call you Gerate?) – JAWS: THE REVENGE came in with the latest batch just last week. I’v listened to it twice and it hasn’t grabbed me, not yet anyway, and I usually love Michael Small’s music. In this case I think he might have been the wrong man for the job. His talent was so immense that it seems wasted here. Between the Williams material, Small just seems to be filling space with not-very-interesting filler material. I might change my mind after I get to know it better, and of course you might love it, but so far I’m unimpressed and slightly disappointed.

                    Hi Graham,

thank you for your view! Your assessment matches with my experience as the score left no impression in context. In recent Month I have become very picky when it comes to film score albums.
This might be one I will skip.
But if they ever publish Alan Parker’s Jaws 3D again, that might be one I will get. I remember listening to the album at a record store when it came out and I liked what I heard. Not enough to buy it at that time. But now I would be in for it.

Sorry for missusing the Zoom thread for my Jaws sequel topic.

Unlike many of my acquisitions, I have very specific memories of acquiring the JAWS IV promo CD, before it was reissued commercially. Laurent Watteau, who occasionally posts on FSM, sent it to me, maybe some 20 years ago (I’ve tried to contact him recently, btw, in order to invite him here, but he’s not responded to my PMs on FSM). I primarily needed it for completist purposes, but I didn’t really need it – in retrospect – nor Parker’s JAWS 3D, for that matter. It has some okay passages, but as Graham says, mostly unremarkable suspense cues and the like. Not quite up to Small’s usual standard, IMO.

I think Jaws 3D is indeed the better score (and probably movie ;-)) I only have the old album.

I like both Alan Parker’s JAWS 3D and Michael Small’s JAWS: THE REVENGE.
JAWS 3D is the more substantial score, quite elaborate, with a beautiful main theme and some very well done “shark/action” writing. I had this ever since the movie came out (original LP) and later on Intrada’s 2CD set. Definitely worth getting.

Michael Small’s score for JAWS: THE REVENGE is, well, “smaller” (sorry about that), it’s a condensed score, that takes Williams’ original shark theme and spins a new composition around it. How much mileage you may get out of it may depend on what you are looking for. It’s excellent music, very well composed and orchestrated, but if you’re looking for a relaxing soothing listen, it’s not that, it’s more “Le Sacre du Shark”, with some very interesting orchestral effects and takes on Williams shark theme.

You can find various versions and samples of the score on YouTube.

                          “FSM’s downfall”

Interesting. Was it the general consensus that the FSM forum is dying on its @rse?
Did Zooba and Chickenheart get name-checked as two architects of its downfall?
The traffic there has slowed down remarkably, since it was re-jigged with $50 odd grand.

                          Yes. At least by me.

It’s not that it’s dying. It’s still super active. It’s just that the level of valuable contributions has dropped considerably. One has to go hunt now, for the worthwhile contributions (by yourself and others). I think that, even if I didn’t have this fucking tinnitus issue, I still wouldn’t return at this point in time.

Of course, Nick and I also waxed nostalgic over the early days at FSM, and the ‘troublemakers’ back then (Latham Conger III, Luscious Lazslo, Pluto, Daniel2, Andre Lux and others). But thankfully when there were only people in the chat that had a connection to that, it would be terribly boring to anyone else.

Yes. It’s a chore to find anything of interest there, these days. At least it still has the pedantic bickering 🤦‍♂️
I’m not quite sure what a dead, Patrick Swayze having a 74th birthday party in Heaven has to do with film music, old or new!! 😯
