We need one of those obituary threads.

Very saddened to wake up this morning, after an off-grid weekend in the mountains, to discover that Rick Davies died on Saturday, age 81. Rick Davies is the co-founder of Supertramp, my alltime favourite band.

I knew he got sick with myeloma in 2015, but I was under the impression he was on the mend. A Davies/Hodgson reunion was never gonna happen anyway, but it’s still a considerable chunk of my formative years that died this weekend. I wouldn’t be here without them – prog rock, and Supertramp primarily among it, was an important gateway into film music for me.

    🙁

    Wowow! That is really sad.
The split of Supertramp was a great loss for the music world. Even though each of the two wrote their songs separately and they published them anyway and I wouldn’t like to have missed a great album like Brother Where You Bound, still the swing of that band and the music missed out on something. Not even talking about all those miserable attempts of the band to replace Hodgson with another singer.
    R.I.P. Rick.

Yeah, nothing against Mark Hart (he did okay with a group like Crowded House), but another Hodgson he was not. The group was vibrant when it had that interplay between Hodgson’s natural, poppy falsetto (Hart’s is more strained) and Davies’ hoarse, bluesy, low-register voice.

Always sad to hear. Although I like Supertramp I primarily know the “best of” only… And was not really aware of the issues between the two…

Never heard of Mark Hart before. I liked the first 3 albums of Crowded House a lot – stil listen to them occasionally – but after the 4th I lost track of them…

Thor, I don’t know how often you visit FSM nowadays, but your old thread about deceased former members has been… resurrected… with the addition of a few more names.

Thanks for the heads-up, Graham! Very sad to hear about Thomas/Tom “sdtom” Kiefner, in particular, who was a regular primarily on Maintitles and a long-time cyber-friend. He even posted a brief “hello” on this board, back in 2018 in the welcome thread, under the username “max steiner”. I knew he was ill, and for the last couple of years, he didn’t respond to anything on Facebook or elsewhere, so I had a feeling it was getting worse.

Robert Redford has died. What an icon! My mom had a crush on him for, like, forever, and everytime he was on the telly, I always shouted out that she had to come see.

Probably the Hollywood actor with the very best instinct on picking his roles.
    Every movie was worth watching.

I think, even I got a crush on him in “Barefoot in the Park”.

His last great role was in ALL IS LOST (2013) — great physical acting. Seen that film probably 5 times, it’s very much up my alley (sheer survival, almost no dialogue, closed quarters, great mood, lots of weather). In fact, it’s probably my favourite film with Redford.

Other favourites are THE CHASE, ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN and SNEAKERS.

I liked his THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN and OUR SOULS AT NIGHT (which also has probably the last Goldenthal score to a film that is not by his wife). Of course all nowhere near the classics.

Other favourites are THE CHASE, ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN and SNEAKERS.

Good list. I would add THREE DAYS OF CONDOR and especially THE STING which is a favorite since childhood days.

Damn, very sorry to read that Klaus Doldinger has died, age 89. 🙁

THE NEVERENDING STORY is one of my favourite scores of all time, and DAS BOOT is obviously a classic. As we’ve discussed in the “German film music” thread.

I’ve sampled some other bits and bobs over the years, but always had the intention to dig deeper — into both the Passport stuff and other scores (like TATORT, whatever is available), but never got around to it. Now is a good opportunity to do so.

Indeed sad! Too few of his film or tv scores are released, often mostly some (even new recorded) themes only. I think we mailed about that I was thinking about attempting an incomplete filmography overview for next year actually expected 90th anniversary… I already collected some series and films to create some suites (if possible if not much SFX). Maybe I should try a discopgraphy roudup instead… AS you know around 30 years ago I last time wrote some few reviews for a German fanzine named LIMITED EDITION. I even did a short review for DAS BOOT if I recall right.

    RIP Doldinger.

His 1983 album Constellations seems like a TD/Jarre clone!

Nice one, I didn’t know that. I do know the track Connstellation 5 from somewhere else not knowing it is Doldinger (although you can actually hear it). I am sure that track was used somewhere in some TV series or else but I don’t remember yet where.

The Passport album “ATARAXIA” from the same time is also pretty synthy.

I knew it! It is actually the theme from a 1974 German TV thriller named EINER VON UNS BEIDEN which was directed by Wolfang Petersen and starred Jürgen Prochnow who also starred in DAS BOOT later. “Constellation 5” appears under that film name on a compilation. As so often the actual film track or score is completely unreleased.

Listening to CONSTELLATION for the first time now, and Jon’s description is very precise – it definitely feels like a cross between Tangerine Dream and Jean Michel Jarre. The track that Malte mentions, “Constellation 5”, is 99% Jarre sound-a-like, however. Fun stuff! I love it.

Looking Doldinger up on Wikipedia, did you know that he worked with Keith Forsey early on in the latter’s career? That was news to me.

I think he was drummer on Passport’s precedessor ensemble Motherhood where Doldinger used the pseudonym Paul Nero late 60s/early 70s.

Listening to the PASSPORT RMX album right now that Doldinger co-produced and performed on. A child of its time surely but the originals still shine through. https://www.discogs.com/de/release/524920-Klaus-Doldinger-Passport-Rmx-Vol-1

Director Lee Tamahori died today, age 75. Apparently, he had Parkinson’s.

Anyone who hasn’t seen ONCE WERE WARRIORS, should do so. Great film.

Some fine scores attached to his movies. Dave Grusin’s noir-y MULHOLLAND FALLS, Goldsmith’s expansive THE EDGE (underrated film, the score is one of my top favourites by the composer), David Arnold’s DIE ANOTHER DAY. Sigbjørn wrote a review of Goldsmith’s ALONG CAME A SPIDER here.

Yes, just heard the news about Lee Tamahori. Unforgettable his movie Once Were Warriors (1994), that was the one that put him on the map for me. He never quite lived up to that great movie, but of course did some other fine movies with good scores.

I was just about to post about it at FSM, but the board is so excruciatingly slow right now… I just came here.
And I’d have pretty much written the same post Thor did. 😀
I think Jerry Goldsmith’s score for ALONG CAME A SPIDER is way underrated, as it is usually seen as one of his lesser efforts, but I disagree. The opening cue “Night Talk” alone is just totally inventive, the musical equivalent of creepy things lurking in the shadows of the night.

It’s one of his “lesser” scores that I actually find interesting, although I find the more upbeat material towards the end quite generic.

Most interesting Tamahori-composer for me is probably Mark Isham on NEXT.

Sad to hear about the death of Ton Werkman, the founder of soundtrackcollector.com. Obviously in and of itself, and what it means for his loved ones. But also on a more selfish level, as I’ve used that site extensively over the years. It has values that Discogs doesn’t. I do wonder what’s going to happen to it now. His son says this on the site:

16-Nov-2025 – I’m deeply saddened to share that my father, Ton, the founder of SoundtrackCollector.com, passed away on November 6, 2025 at the age of 84. His passion and dedication built a place where soundtrack enthusiasts from around the world could connect and discover music they loved. He will be greatly missed, and his legacy lives on through the community he created. At this moment, it’s not yet clear how SoundtrackCollector.com will be maintained going forward. I’ll share updates when I can. Erwin Werkman

Yes, I know. Soundtrackcollector.com is a great resource. I have never met Ton Werkman and don’t think I had ever even any conversation with him, but the site is an invaluable resource. I have no idea what is going to happen, but I hope someone will pick up the ball and continue the site. Who knows…

Absolutely horrified to read about Rob Reiner and his wife this morning. Stabbed to death in their own home! Just a few days ago, I watched him on Ted Danson’s podcast, and I was looking forward to the new SPINAL TAP movie. I keep reading some rumours online that it might be their son, Nick, who killed them (he’s struggled with drug addiction for years), but let’s await further official information.

Yes, I’ve heard it in the news this morning. It’s People Magazine that started the rumor that their own son stabbed them to death, but the latest official confirmation I have has not confirmed that, the son was merely questioned. Either way a horrible story.
I never met Rob Reiner, but I actually have met Carl Reiner, his father, and he was a very nice man, very friendly and supportive.

    #7011

What were the circumstances in which you met Carl?

STAND BY ME – in particular – is an absolute masterpiece, his magnum opus, that has a deep personal connection to me.

    #7013

Official reports are coming in now, that the son has indeed been detained as a suspect. What an absolute tragedy. (And the less said about that fucking monster president’s tweet, the better).
