I’m bummed that I couldn’t go out in the Oslo streets last night and celebrate with the rest of the 100.000 crazy Norwegians, including the crown prince, apparently. But I had to prepare for that damn medical exam (which was thankfully over 30 minutes ago). But I’ll try to get out when we play England in the quarter finals on Saturday!
And England, eh? Congrats to Tall Guy, Kev and other Brits who visit here! I didn’t see the match, but I understand it was pretty chaotic.
Will we beat you guys? I’d say it’s 50-50. England is not on the level of France, Spain or Argentina, but pretty damn solid.
So what do we all think about scummy FIFA and cheating Trump and rescinded Red Cards?
Go Belgium?? šAn absolute disgrace. Rarely have we seen corruption so out in the open. But I expected nothing less from that twat Infantino and his co-horts.
I’ll try not to let that stand in the way for the match itself, though. I have no particular favourites of USA and Belgium. Maybe Belgium, because I’ve been there a lot, and have many friends there (but still bummed some of them won’t post here). But then I have friends in the US too. Let’s just hope for a good match. But first, the “classic” Spain vs. Portugal tonight.

Ha, ha…true. Shame about Scotland’s exit; as a Brit, I guess one doesn’t automatically start rooting for England just because Scotland is out.
You were spot on with your prediction, Kev. First goal won, and the deserved team when all’s said and done. Love or hate Ronaldo, he’s a formidable player who’s now played his last World Cup match.
I suppose justice prevailed in one form or another after Belgium takes an easy win against the US. And I say easy, because I just watched the highlights reel, and boy — talk about multiple defensive mistakes by a country which constantly chants “DEFENSE” as their biggest slogan.

Sadly, we’re a much more divided nation than that, Thor.
When I was very young (naive?), I would cheer Ireland/Scotland/Wales in any competition, after England.
As I got older and went on holidays, I discovered that Ireland/Scotland/Wales fans HATED England and would cheer anyone on against England.
Obviously, that shifted my loyalties somewhat and now I just laugh whenever they fail at whatever hurdle (usually just trying to qualify for a tournament).
Sad, but true.I’m guessing it’s pretty common for neighbouring countries? There’s also intense rivalry between Norway, Sweden and Denmark in sports. Especially Norway and Sweden in winter sports. But the Danes don’t like it when we do well in summer sports, and especially not football – because they consider themselves the “big brother” in that area. Perhaps not so strange, since they’ve traditionally been better, and even won the Euros in 1992. And now they’re not even qualified. A lot of envy, I think. And they constantly bring up our oil money, as if every single Norwegian is stinking rich (I live well below the poverty line). I’m a quarter Dane myself, and have spent every summer there since 1982, so it’s a double-edged sword for me, this.
Of course, it’s a bit different for Britain, since you’re actually in a “united kingdom” that not everyone likes to be part of.
Sadly, it seems to be the ‘human condition’ as a whole. It must be built in to our DNA to be rebellious, jealous, mistrusting, whatever.
Everything seems designed to create conflict/envy/confrontation, be it politics, religion or sports!!
Even movies and film music seem to create argument and disunity (in certain quarters), in what must be the nichest of niches.
I wonder if train-spotters or bird-watchers fight? šI blow hot and cold about supporting our fellow āhome nationsā. Currently it looks like like this:
Wales – Iāll support them when playing anyone except England. Thatās because over a third of their starting team play for Leeds: Karl Darrow, Ethan Ampadu, Joe Roden, Dan James.
Scotland – currently not a fan! Not as long as John McGinn is playing for them. He put Archie Grayās career back a year with a scummy, eyes-closed tackle in a pre-season friendly. While Archie plays for Spurs now, heās one of our own.
Northern Ireland – indifferent. Good luck to them but Iām disinterested.
So yes Iām petty. Sue me.

Great game. Would have been nice to see Egypt hang in there, but Argentina got all the breaks and never gave up, I suppose.
That 2nd Egypt goal (that never was) was beautiful.Yes, that was weird. The foul was on the other side of the field, and there was a whole attack and goal inbetween, before it was called. I haven’t seen that before.
Vice versa, the Switzerland-Colombia match now is a giant snoozefest. Kinda expected. Not exactly two “sexy” teams. But one of them will go on.
I missed the earlier game, but am currently watching Sui vs Col. It feels as if, for this game only, the concept of goals has been eradicated in favour of deciding the game by number of fouls committed.
No match tonight! I’m having abstinence!
By the way, speaking of sports and politics, the IOC just allowed Russians to come back into the fold for the next Winter Olympics (the Winter Olympics are a big deal to Norwegians). Under a neutral flag, but still. Absolutely despicable decision by the IOC.
No surprises in sport/politics now. Nothing sinks too low, when there is no bar.

Israel, and many other evil things the Tangerine Twat’s empire is doing or assisting. Yes, there was lots of talk about it in the media over here too, about boycots. But ultimately, the return to the World Cup after 28 years was more important than anything.
