Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterOne of my favourite threads at the now-dead Maintitles.net board (the primary model for this messageboard) was a thread where we could vent freely about things going on in our personal lives. All the bad stuff, in particular. If one wants, of course.
Suffice to say it’s been two terrible months in my life, which is why I haven’t posted much on any of the messageboards I frequent. The increased tinnitus, as previously mentioned, along with other health issues. An uncle of mine died two days ago. I had to identify the body with my dad, which was a harrowing experience. Monetary issues. And a few other things.
One tries to push through and do one’s job nonetheless, but it’s difficult.
Anyways, now the thread is here for anyone who wants to vent about anything. Can’t wait to post more upbeat stuff in the “holiday thread” soon.

GerateWohlParticipantHi Thor,
sad to hear, that things weren’t going too well for you in the past month.
And sorry for your loss. For a few minutes I started writing here something.
But then I thought, I don’t want to depress people and deleted it.19. June 2025 at 15:09 #5148
Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterThank you!
For a few minutes I started writing here something.
But then I thought, I don’t want to depress people and deleted it.Don’t feel that way! That’s what this thread is for. Here is a good example of a thread I had in mind at Maintitles, which I found really therapeutic.

Malte MüllerKeymasterVery sorry to hear about those bad times besides that already awful tinnitus. I personally will generally not post about such things in public.

markrayenParticipantSad to hear about the tinnitus Thor. Sure hope you have some useful remedies to alleviate the stress.
24. June 2025 at 20:35 #5163
Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterCheers, Mark! Hope all is going well with you down there, in the south.

markrayenParticipantWrong topic to say all is well? I’m off to Risør shortly, for the chamber music festival. Looking forward to “getting away”, even if it’s only for a few hours.

Graham WattParticipantSorry to hear about the worsening of your tinnitus, Thor.
I’ve had a fairly shit past two years. My mum died in September 2023 and I was constantly jetting back and forthe between Spain and Scotland. Thankfully my brother is in Scotland and he could do a lot of the funeral arrangements. I was with her when she died. It was terrible. No sense of peace, just terror in her eyes. I was alone with her then. My brother couldn’t come to the hospital as he was really ill with Covid. I also saw my dad die, in 1982. I think about my parents every day.
The day my mum died, I started seeing lots of flashing lights at the corners of my eyes, and swarms of flies. In the morning I was in the Emergency bit of the hospital, where I was told I was in danger of having a detached retina. Then I went upstairs and watched my mum die.
Since then I’ve lost 10 kilos in weight. I had diarrhoea for nearly two years, but it’s getting a bit better now. I think it’s all down to nerves.
Are you sorry you asked?
4. July 2025 at 23:37 #5221
Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterNo, I’m not sorry I asked.
Sounds like a terrible time, Graham. You have my heartfelt sympathies. I hope, however, that you’re starting to get on top of things now and have some sort of normal everyday life.
4. July 2025 at 23:55 #5227
Graham WattParticipantThanks Thor. Yes, we get over everything. I’m a grandad now! Taking the baby out for a lunchtime beer tomorrow!

Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterCongrats! A news piece worthy of the cheers thread (which this isn’t)!

Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterIRRITATING NEIGHBOURS! Any of you experienced that?
The neighbour above me is refurbishing, and will do so until at least April, I’ve been told. Hammering and constant drilling whose sound becomes louder when it goes into the wall and down to me. I have a home office, and basically can’t do my job (right now, for example, I need to sample thousands of 2025 soundtracks for the annual ‘top 10’ podcast….nope, impossible). And that’s on top of the tinnitus and all that. I can barely even stay in my apartment, much less do my job.
Meanwhile, the neighbour BELOW me is awake all night, and keeps walking around and slamming doors and cupboards. And I mean all night. He starts at about midnight and keeps going until 6-7 in the morning. So no night sleep either. Noise at night, noise in the day, noise in my head. Can’t really go outside for a long time either, as temperatures are freezing (-5 to -10 at the moment).
Damn them all to hell!

I guess with some modern scores, especially from our mutual composer friend from Germany, it is particularly hard to distinguish between what is your neighbor’s tool noise and what is the score.
Jokes aside. I wish you all the best. Can’t you settle an agreement with your building neighbor about working times of silence?
6. January 2026 at 12:41 #7307
Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterAlas, no. It is working hours now, so I suppose they’re in their right. Most normal people are away at work, but sadly some – like me – have home office. Can’t go to a café either, or the library (plus, I shouldn’t use headphones too much with my condition). So — all is lost. One just has to persevere, and hope it ends at some point.
It is times like these I envy those of you who live out in the countryside, or at the very least have your own house where you control the surroundings.
6. January 2026 at 13:04 #7310
Malte MüllerKeymasterThat sounds annoying especially with the tinnitus… I gladly have relative unproblematic neighbours so far not causing any real trouble regarding my home office.
6. January 2026 at 13:50 #7312
Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterSurely, there must be SOME others here who have experienced annoying neighbours at some point in their life? Aren’t most of us apartment dwellers?
(obviously, some of us may BE annoying neighbours to others, I realize that, while we blast our film music at top volume!).
6. January 2026 at 15:14 #7313
Nicolai P. ZwarParticipantWhat can I say, I don’t have any annoying neighbors. Our neighborhood is — fortunately — mostly calm and friendly, lots of younger families. Construction noise, if it’s there, tends to be temporary. There is even a neighborhood Whatsapp group, and we usually have a big summer BBQ get-together, where most of the neighbors from our block come together for some food and drinks, and a sometimes a spontaneous smaller winter get together (which was just now on January 2nd) and some Glühwein. It’s basically a friendly and calm (some might say “boring”, but I like it to be “boring” where I live) neighborhood, where we go about our business… unless we chat about that house down the street which may or may not be inhabited by possible cannibal-serial-killer cultists… who knows.
6. January 2026 at 16:04 #7314
Thor Joachim HagaKeymasterThat sounds incredibly lucky, Nick. I, too, live in calm neighborhood (one of the fanciest in Oslo). That’s one of the main reasons for why I moved in here almost 20 years ago, and why I’ve decided to stay here ever since. But in the last five years or so, it’s been enveloped by heavy noise. Several houses next to me have been completely refurbished, with all the noise that entails, for millions of Norwegian kroner and for months and years at a time. Then there’s a psychotic dog two houses down that barks all the time. And various crazy neighbours in my own building that are seemingly vampires with all their nocturnal actitivies. And now, then, also the guys above me refurbishing heavily. My paradise is being invaded all over the place.
But even when I look back at the previous places I’ve lived, there have been many, many instances of bad neighbours in various shapes and forms. Dozens of examples. Guess I’m just the unlucky one out.
6. January 2026 at 16:47 #7316
Nicolai P. ZwarParticipantMaybe… I’ve lived in different places over the years, a few times I had jerks for neighbors, but never direct neighbors, so they didn’t affect me in my day to day life all that much.
6. January 2026 at 22:46 #7320
Jon AanensenParticipantFor 16 years now I have rented a basement apartment. Price has always been nice, I now pay 6000 NOK monthly plus heating, so I have always been lucky with low prices ever since I moved out from home in 2000. A couple in their fifties are the house owners, and they still have a son living at home. He occassionally have some wild parties that irritate me, but other than that the house is quite calm.
Like Thor I live in a wealthy part of my city, and there have been lots of noisy building and refurbishing in my neighborhood earlier, but thankfully not now.
Some years down the line I will probably buy my own apartment, but I have kind of got stuck here, lol.
8. January 2026 at 22:24 #7345
Nils Jacob Holt HanssenParticipantOuch, Thor… that sounds really bad – literally! Hope things quiet down a bit for you soon.
Luckily, nothing like that to report here. I live in a six-apartment building, in a suburb some 15 km east of Oslo, and it’s all pretty calm, with well behaved neighbours. The teenage daughters next door (and sometimes the parents) have a party on the weekend from time to time, but it’s usually quiet from around 12 or 1. So, not really a problem.
