Miles Davis: Ascenseur pour l’échafaud
Groundbreaking short but very effective jazz score.
23. May 2026 at 18:05 #11326I have no top ten list yet but I would name Francis Monkman’s THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY. Seems he did more scores but I actually don’t know any other.
23. May 2026 at 20:48 #11330ASCENSEUR POUR L’ÉCHAUFAUD is a masterpiece, and one can only speculate what more Davis could have done in the film music realm. Also love its use in Lee Chang-dong’s BURNING (2018).
THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY is a favourite of mine. The opening theme always reminded me of The Alan Parsons Project’s “Gold Bug”. Dig the whole CD, including the songs. And the film.

I have the LP since the late 80s and dig it as well. I think it was a bargain and blind buy even! I only saw the movie conciously a few years ago! Too bad that it was recording in mono or at least no stereo elements survived (the later 2CD edition had a fake stereo mix only).
Interestingly I also always found it sounded like Alan Parsons, athough no one of them is involved. Monkman has a very loose connection to them as he indeed appears as a guest on harpsichod on TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION “House of Usher” suite on “Pavane”. Seems to have been his only time.
Did you ever check out any of his band’s or solo albums?
24. May 2026 at 10:21 #11336Monkman’s? No, I don’t believe I did. Something to get around to! Any recommendations there?
(by the way, don’t be surprised if you’ll see a dedicated thread to THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY from me down the line, when I get to it in my CD walkthrough).

arte will broadcast it tomorrow evening and it is already available online for those who can access it:

No, I never did and hoped you had some recommendation 😉

I know I mention this often but maybe a proper review for the site especially if it is a favorite is not a bad idea, too! Could be even an special category “Oldie but goldie” or so 😉

Yeah, I just watched it. Holds up quite well, excellent cinematography and an original, unusual and highly effective film music.
I forgot Lino Ventura was in it (haven’t seen the movie in decades) and was surprised when I read his “and-credit” in the opening titles.26. May 2026 at 08:58 #11398I did watch it as well. I think I did watch it before but was not entirely sure and didn’t remember that much anymore. Also forgot that Ventura is in there. Great movie and split story. Probably just the German dub version but the music – especially the trumpet – was sadly a bit distorted (seems there was no origina French version broadcasted as I tried to compare).
26. May 2026 at 09:47 #11400Not available here, but there are plenty ways to watch that film again, should I choose to (the Norwegian library system has it available for free streaming). I haven’t seen it since I was a student.
26. May 2026 at 17:29 #11452Gary McFarland did two excellent film scores. Whether he was dabbling or going into a new direction, we will never know.

I remember there was quite a bit of fuss when FSM(?) released EYE OF THE DEVIL years ago. Still haven’t gotten around to that.
