Just to note that all that is availbale on the profile here, too.

It is, and I would guess it’s a basic feature of most modern messageboards. But as Nick alludes to, the FSM board is from the stone age, so you could only view POSTS you’ve made, not threads you’ve started. Up until now. It MUST be a feature of the new board, I think.

I’m hoping to pillage the 27 years worth of threads I’ve made over there, with an aim to republish some of them here. Providing this board survives with the 6-7 of us regulars posting (out of the 50 registered, real users).

Of course, just an info in case no one had looked 😉

Re-posting entired threads on the forum or making some proper post for the site? The latter would probably be a good idea.

It’s sadly quite usual that only a minority is active everywhere. I am running a message group (a mix of mailinglist and forum) for illustrators and althoug there 160+ people on the same 12-20 are active.

Oh yes, just the original FSM post, not the entire thread. I have plans on how to do it.

Does anyone know what kind of password fsm is asking for on their site now?

    #5904

I don’t think it’s a log-in that is meant for us users. Certainly my password didn’t work (if I remembered it correctly, it’s been ages since I had to log in to FSM).

    #5908

Well, it’s up. It looks okay. They’ve kept the general idea of the original board, but updated everything. The lack of borders feels a bit odd. And it’s slow as molasses at the moment, but hopefully that will improve.

Alas, there is no “threads you’ve created” option…. 🙁

    #5909

…and I don’t think it’s quite up and running yet, because I can’t seem to see any field in which to post replies??

And you can’t post a new thread either.

    61000 posts by Thor. Impressive!

    I have 12000.

It’s definitely not fully operational yet; the Beta version ran considerably smoother.

Looks they launched a little too early as a lot of styling is not yet looking ready. But what a task they managed to apparently port all the old forum data!

    #5917

It looks and behaves like a mess at the moment. But let’s give it a week or so and see what happens.

Yeah, with such a huge relaunch it is quite normal that not everything works 100% initially.

    #5922

But 1.8 MILLION posts…..that’s quite the haul to transfer.

The usual suspects on JWfan are grumbling that the free website they sometimes use isn’t 100% overnight. I’ll be happy when FSM is up and running, as I plan on leaving the other site for good.

Not that there aren’t usual suspects on FSM, but the conversation does at least seem to revolve around music there.

I would love it, Thor, if you could bring some of your old thread starters here. I’m not very good at that sort of thing. I like these forums, even if the site does yell at me in Norwegian before I change it.

Yeah, that’s quite a number… and lots of threads. I suppose that’s why they did not bother to implement 301 redirects for the forum. Pity, because that means the Google search won’t register the new threads… at least for a while. But perhaps the new board search will function much better.

Especially since the migration to a totally new data structure and even keeping old login credentials and such.

Yeah, noticed as well that my old bookmarks don’t work. You probably cannot redirect all individual URLs especially on the forum (totrally different url structure) but at least general pages/sections. For a shop website not doing this could mean kind of SEO death. But the site does not sell anything to the masses and ranks huge in our niche anyway. But even with redirections Google would take weeks to months to catalogue. That site ranks for us in our niche but in general probably not that much and Google amongs lots of unknown measures uses that to decide how fast it does things.

That’s weird with the Norwegian. I thought this site automatically appeared in English to foreigners!

I will investigate the FSM topics thing. I’ll probably e-mail Lukas about it after the dust has settled a bit over here. Appears there are some 1200 topics I’ve done over the years, so would be great if there was a way to go through them rather than the 62000(!) posts.

The site itself does especially since most content is static being either English or Norwegian. But if you are logged in for the fourm you get Norwegian – being the default backend language – for many default texts unless you define English on your user account.

I’ll probably e-mail Lukas about it after the dust has settled a bit over here.

Yeah, right now with the a little too early relaunch is not the best time. He’s surely bombarded with requests and reports despite the forum posts.

I can’t seem to be able to post a new thread on fsm? How do you do it?

    #5993

No idea. I admit I check it out every day to see how everything is proceeding — just out of sheer curiousity — but it’s probably better to give it a week or two to see things fall more in place. By the way, feel free to mention this board over there for anyone wanting to have an ‘alternative place to be’ while the FSM board is being fixed. We could use a few more participants.

Currently it’s no fun to post at FSM… it is excruciatingly slow… up to unresponsive. But I have hopes they’ll get this going eventually.
I hate, absolutely hate unresponsive interfaces. They slow me down enormously. Not just because they are slow, but because if I have to wait for more than two or three seconds for a response after a click or touch, I tend to be off to do something else, forgetting what I was actually trying to do in the first place.

    #5999

I do notice it’s getting better day by day, but there are still a number of issues I hope will be fixed. Like that annoying “rollercoaster scrolling” that happens every time you want to go to the latest post. Makes me seasick; it should be instantenous.

That being said, I DID notice today that it is now possible to find JUST the topics you’ve started over the years (and not every single post you’ve ever made). Seems to be a recently implemented function, and I really hope it stays. So there’s my weekend activities sorted — finding some good ones and re-post them here! 🙂

It’s indeed a matter of set up. You can do that via JS or via CSS. If you do the latter it is sort of global setting. Many prefer smoother scrolling insteaf of directly “jumping”. A sort of scroll will always happen.

    #6004

A sort of scroll will always happen.

    It doesn’t here, thank God!

    #6006

It actually does scroll, just pretty fast 😉

    #6007

Must be faster than the eye can see, because I go directly to the last post! 🙂

    #6036

Wow, today the FSM board is WORSE than it was yesterday. Didn’t see that coming, it has been gradual improvement over the last few days. Some things:

    – it’s still very slow and sluggish
    – the search engine still doesn’t work (unless it takes several minutes to load, my patience stopped after about 30 seconds of spinning wheels)
    – on my cell phone, the threads sometimes flicker uncontrollably when you open a thread
    – you can no longer go to the latest new post by clicking the thread title itself, only to the very last post by clicking “last post by” (same as this board, but then again this is not a $65K+ board)
    – I still hate that ‘weeeeeee’, rollercoaster-like automatic scrolling, makes my head hurt
    – there is no “rich text editor”, just a basic text box for replies. Seems like some get it, others not.

I have this feeling that the more suggestions are voiced by the membership, the more unruly it becomes.

I should really stop checking in on the board and wait a week or two, especially since I’m on an FSM sabbatical anyway, but curiousity gets the better of me.

I wonder why my list of favorite composers from the old profile is not carried over to the new one?

If you should bette report the issue there instead of here. The “rollercoaster” will not go away by itsself 😉 Cannot say how it is logged in but just visiting it does work generally and the speed is okay, too. On mobile the layout ist still a bit off here an there but it also improves.

I have this feeling that the more suggestions are voiced by the membership, the more unruly it becomes.

Maybe Lukas & Co doing the old mistake to try to please everyone. Sometimes some things are just as they are with a news system.

I am still puzzled that they launched that early. I would have never dared to do that with a website project. Anway the huge task was getting the data over and that they seem to have managed rather well.
