I wasn’t super thrilled and my expectations for future Star Wars scores are at an historical low point. But I found Michael Abels’ and Cameron Moody’s efforts for The Acolyte very ok. Much better than anything from Holt, Britell or Göransson or any other of his Mandalorian stand-ins.

I assume technically Newman could go in a direction like Shadow of the Empire. But I don’t think he will.
Until Solo obviously the understanding of every composer like McNeely, Powel or Giacchino was, “this is Star Wars, so I will provide a Star Wars score.
But Göransson started this “They hired me, so I will provide a Göransson score.” Let’s see how Newman will handle this. With him it could go both ways. Let’s see if we are going to get a Star Wars score or a Thomas Newman score.

“They hired me, so I will provide a Göransson score.”

They of course will get instructions by the producers what to do and what not. They surely will not be allow to “just do what they” like on a multi million dollar francise by Disney.

Yeah, I remember a conversation between Göransson and Favreau from a Mandalorian making-of where Göransson said to Favreau, if he expected something like Williams’ music they had got a problem, and Favreau responded, no no, he should just provide what he thinks is right. Yes, they wanted an original dedicated musical language for the show.
But as Göransson said himself. It wasn’t the case, that he said, you can get whatever you want, I can do anything. He said, “If you want the original SW sound, then I am not your guy.”

It takes some self confidence and commerical standing to do that. I have not seen much of MANDALORIAN but I think that slight western sound does work even if often too atmospheric if you can say that. Despite that the Williams sound is iconic and more fun standalone.

I saw a fan edit of some Mandalorian scenes tracked with Williams’ music. And it was a difference like day and night. With Göransson’s score I just saw actors in weird costumes walking through an artificial scenery. But Williams’ music provided the fairy dust to make me believe that I watch events in another world.

But I know, it works for others and there are many fans of Göransson’s Mandalorian score. So, just my problem.

I can imagine that Williams will also work because I/we are used having grown up with it as “Star Wars sound”.
