Hey, we need a thread for things going on in the world (this one is named after one we used to have on Maintitles.net). As you know, there is no rule against political or religious discussion on this forum – only the single rule that we treat each other with respect despite potential different viewpoints. And I trust that the tiny handful of us will do just that.

Looking with dread right now on Trump’s actions in Venezula, breaking international law with ease. Yes, I’m glad to see Maduro go, but they should have handled that themselves. This sets a very dangerous precedent. But what else is news, right? Crazy times we’re living in, the craziest I’ve experienced in my lifetime, anyway. I just hope Greenland isn’t next.

While I am not sure the times really more crazy than those I experienced before, it feels certainly that way…

I fail to see the difference between Trump’s invasion in Venezuela and Putin’s invasion in Ukraine.

    #7277

There isn’t any difference, really, except that the Ukraine leaders are ‘good guys’ and the Venezuelan leaders ‘bad guys’ in the scheme of things. But principally, there is no difference.

And both countries even did similar things before…

I don’t share Zbigniew Preisner’s extreme pessimism, exactly, but I think he pretty much says what everyone is feeling at this point:

    Right.

So Machado gave her Nobel Peace Prize medal to the orange monster. Sigh. I guess I can understand her desperation in being “in” with him, but it undermines the whole point of the prize. And the Nobel comittee should have anticipated this.

Don’t think it undermines the prize because it is not the prize but just the medal, basically a memorabilia.

    #7545

True. It has no actual meaning. But I do hope the Nobel committee takes knowledge from this. They knew that Marchado supported trump before they handed out the prize (although it’s probably a strategic support rather than an actual one). In Norway, there have been calls to replace the Nobel committee after this.

If he had been black, would you have called him the black monster?

    #7556

No. The orange is in reference to his excessive tan cream, not his actual skin colour. It signifies everything that is fake about him.

Hello again, friends! I’ve never known such convulsive times. The whole planet shitting itself waiting for the next unpredictable/predictable move from the giant orange toddler. I hate him and I want him to die. And his cronies and spokespersons are just as vile. I have friends who are as deranged as they are, but I thank dog (anagram of God – I didn’t use that word because, like Santa, he doesn’t exist) that my deranged friends are not in positions of power.

The whole scenario is undermining science fiction and satire. Remember in BACK FROM THE FUTURE when Marty McFly tells Doc (?) that Ronald Reagan is President? And Doc says, “Oh yeah? And who’s vice-president? Jerry Lewis”? Oh how we laughed.

To be honest, even though now there is an orange sitting on the throne of the White House US foreign politics have only changed slightly.
Invasions for mineral resources by US military labeling it “war on drugs” or “for democracy” happen about every 10 years. So, no big change there. The new thing is that with Greenland a NATO partner is target.

Also people getting shot in a traffic control in the US is nothing new. Only that it now is happening to white people is new.

I just mean, the differences to former administration are significant but probably smaller than people might think.

What is important to understand, Trump is nothing without the Republican party supporting him, his MAGA mob and the courts supporting him. When he gets replaced nothing much will change because he is just a small portion of that machinery. He doesn’t have the intellectual capabilities to come up with something like Project 2025.
Trump is just a toy in a game of ideologists like Peter Thiel and other masterminds.

You say that’s conspiracy theory? Still I find that more likely than imagining that a slop like Trump is rearranging the world according to a smart masterplan from his hollow mind.

    #7562

Oh, I think it’s much worse now than it has ever been, at least in my lifetime. It says something when even old laughing stocks like George Bush jr. or Sarah Palin come off as a perfectly reasonable persons in comparison.

I don’t believe in conspiracy theories, but there’s no doubt there is a huge apparatus behind the Tangerine Twat that facilitates everything. It’s about systematic dismantling. For example the ICE having a large portion of right wing extremists, and a training programme that only lasts some 40 days. These are facts, not theories. No wonder shit like that shooting happens.

For the US and the world, it’s about holding fast in the coming months and years – first to the midterms, and then to 2029.

    #7571

Tangerine Twat is now also threatening another tariff on Norway because we’ve sent two – TWO – people to Greenland to participate in security measures. Other countries are affected too. Fuck him and everyone who stand with him.

(I promised myself after he won the election to curate my exposure to Trump-related news as much as possible, to shield myself, but it’s terribly difficult when it’s all over the airwaves).

    Tangerine Twat

Tangerine Nightmare to sadly pun one of our favorite bands… I will forever have him connected with one of the worst days of my life: On January 20th, 2017 he became president the first time my mother died.

    #7580

Sorry to hear that, Malte. I suppose world events like that become insignificant in the face of something so deeply personal, but it certainly didn’t ameliorate the circumstances.

Will Trump accept midterms results if Republicans lose?

    #7582

    Probably not.

I imagine that his “joke” about not even bothering to hold mid-terms was to dissuade people to vote at all. But surely he’s not clever enough to think of that possiblity. The sooner the world is rid of this stupid, capricious baby the better. I wouldn’t underestimate the real danger he poses. He’s like a four-year-old pyromaniac in a fireworks store.

    #7588

Totally agree with what others here are saying about current world conditions. It doesn’t affect my sleep or anything (at least not yet), but sometimes when I wake up in the morning, thoughts about what Trump and his cronies (and Putin) are doing pop into my head, and then I go “Shit! What the f…!”. Not a great way to start your day 🙁 .

Related to what Graham wrote earlier about these things being worse than science fiction, these days I sometimes feel like I’ve been transported to some parallel universe.

Yes, indeed, but since that news broke later the day my reaction was nevertheless like “Not that as well!”…

Graham, I hope I count as one of your friends, but not a deranged one; but if in fact I AM deranged (for how would I know if I’m deranged?) I hope that at least I’m not in a position of power.

Tall, I can count my friends on the hands of one finger, and they (you) are both deranged, but thankfully your’e obviously not in a position of power otherwise you would have had the invoice police onto me and I’d be lying on a mattress soaked in other men’s piss, being pecked at by Franco’s pet vulture.

Just what the FUCK is the tangerine twat up to now? That latest tantrum about “not having to bother much about peace now” seeing as Thor didn’t allow him to get the Knobbly Piss Prize is the work of a top loony. Even Putin liked it, urging him to go ahead and grab Greenland. What a bunch of unbelievably moronic wankers the entire world is full of. All except MY deranged friends.

Careful! The turnips are falling from the roof! SQUAAAAWK!!!

    #7612

Yes, every day is something outlandish from over there now. Every day. The Nobel committee is of course an independent award body, and has nothing to do with our prime minister or government. But to the twat, it’s all the same. Let’s not forget, this is the guy who says Denmark can’t lay claim to Greenland because “a boat landed there 500 years ago”. Hmmm, that bit about the boat sounds familiar. I think there’s even a great Vangelis score accompanying it.

Not to forget that there were already people when these boats landed… Btw, he has German ancestors and we won’t take him back 😉

Just read that Philip Glass has removed his new symphony’s premiere from the Kennedy Center:
    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/politics-news/philip-glass-kennedy-center-1236486116/

“After thoughtful consideration, I have decided to withdraw my Symphony No. 15 “Lincoln” from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts,” Glass wrote on social media. “Symphony No. 15 is a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, and the values of the Kennedy Center today are in direct conflict with the message of the Symphony. Therefore, I feel an obligation to withdraw this Symphony premiere from the Kennedy Center under its current leadership.”

Funny is this answer of the Kennedy Center PR:

“We have no place for politics in the arts, and those calling for boycotts based on politics are making the wrong decision,”

Since when have arts no place for politics!?

    #7863

Indeed. What utter bollocks from those fucking hijackers of the Kennedy Centre. Good on Glass for doing that!

“We have no place for politics in the arts, and those calling for boycotts based on politics are making the wrong decision,”

OMG. I would expect something that stupid from Facebook trolls, but not from the spokesperson for an actual fucking arts center!! Where to even begin… Sigh.

And to chime in on this thread in general, the world events do effect me very profoundly. I also feel I have to check the news many times a day, and sort of prepare for the worst every time.

The sooner the orange turd takes his last breath the better, but another problem is that some of the people around him (Miller, Vance, Noem…) are just as revolting, but unfortunately not as stupid. Still, anything is probably better than this constant game of never knowing what to expect the next day, because the orange clown is such a constant ticking bomb. Will he actually attack an allied nation today? Maybe tomorrow? The fact that all of Europe has been kissing up to him up to this point makes me sick. It obviously has not worked in anyone’s favour. Dump only cares about himself, no matter what. On a light note: I’m glad we are seeing a change in tone, and that European leaders are much more confrontational now – finally.

I think Grump is physically and mentally uncapable of having any kind feelings of any sort, about another person. Not to mention he is normalising asshole behaviour on a scale like nobody has ever done before. How the hell are we supposed to teach our kids about anti-bullying when the world’s most mighty person is the worst bully and the most thoroughly sick bastard the world has ever seen?
