You know what, I’m going to remove him from the list after I’ve written this. It’s too farfetched to have him on a list of film composers; I’m not even sure of the original dramatic instrumental underscore contribution he’s made.
At least the songs in THE GRADUATE are more integral than Grusin’s bit of original score.
Everyone knows “Cavatina” and its use in THE DEER HUNTER, but he’s played guitar on other soundtracks too, like A FISH CALLED WANDA. For original film music, there’s EMMA’S WAR (1987), but I think there are a couple more? He stays.
Of course and if only to confuse people accidentally stumble upon this thinking that is that other composers 😉 (Who is also annoyed that basically any online vendor lists both together all the time?)
Jürgen Knieper — retired?
As already mentioned a quite important film composer over here especially for his collaboration with Wim Wenders but also did more and alsa some TV. Will try to collect some stuff as there is not much available officially (anymore) I think.
But I suppose I kinda killed that option with this massive tome.
Not really I just simply cannot contribute anything useful to neither thte movies nor the scores…
Not a big fan in genral but I inherited a 2 LP set that I find quite entertaining:
https://www.discogs.com/de/master/108039-Elvis-Elvis-Forever-32-Hits-And-The-Story-Of-A-King1971 😉
The FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS etc.? Where? Did you send it to me? Did I send it to you? I thought maybe I got the CD-R from someone in the States. I no longer have it, it seems, only as files.
Yes, because I have it. Years ago it was part of “our deal” when I relauched the site 😉
I somehow know that Young compilation from somewhere 😉
Yeah, now that you mention it, I did catch that out of the corner of my eye at some point. But wouldn’t have remembered it unless you mentioned it now.
Not terrible exciting actually if I recall right. The show starring David Tennant actualy was quite entertaining even if yet another version was not really necessary.
wasn’t aware that Gerhardt had recorded anything from THE LEFT HAND OF GOD. Was that album mentioned earlier?
It’s only the “Love theme” on the Bogart album from the Classic Film Scores series.:
https://www.discogs.com/de/master/254859-Charles-Gerhardt-National-Philharmonic-Orchestra-Casablanca-Classic-Film-Scores-For-Humphrey-Bogart
If I recall right the only Young on the whole series.Regarding the 80 DAYS by Young I like it but it is not my top favorite by him. Ha, somehow I was not aware that the 2004 version had a score by Jones. Are you aware of that 2021 mini series with a theme by Zimmer?
Great description of the score!
I have the NAXOS and especially the suite from SAMSON & DELILAH is great. LEFT HAND OF GOD I primarily know the lovely track Charles Gerhardt recorded.
No expert on him. Briefly look and as usual on IMDB anything is listed as a credit even after his death where probably just a song was used somewhere… I think you can easily say Bacharach was a “song composers” primarily (following our discussion about “film composers” recently).
I don’t remember it specifially as I always had no general compatible music taste. I was already into film scores the late 80s although it must have taken off around 1987/88 I think when I discovered that more is actually available than I knew. I was a bit older than you back then already 😉
NIGHT GALLERY does not say anything to me but THE NAME OF A GAME has great Grusin theme.
I think I am more a cat but maybe with some small wings 🙂 I am not really a completist that I must have everything but I can sometimes be hooked by a composer’s work for a time. There re things that always get me but I try and am interested in getting a broad range overview – although that certainly failes in general due to amount of stuff available – of any kind of style. But there are some composers like of course Goldsmith I don’t mind to hear every obscure bit they composed at least once.
Btw, otherwise I am also an owl 😉
Great Goldsmith that gladly got an official release!
Never actually heard Reyes’ GRAND PIANO but heard a lot good about the piano concerto.
Wow, that’s a lot more than I though. When should I even expore what’s available? 😉
Never heard of that book but I don’t read that and in general a lot but there seems to be loads of such scifi fantasy series out there. McCreary and team could surely deliver something fitting.
Dune is such a score that just underlines the events on screen and puts exclamation marks here and there.
Especially with the first movie I felt this different. To me the music was overly loud and all over the place counterpoint even in scenes that needed no music at all. I like when music play counterpoint but here I often thought “shut up” especially in some desert scenes that could have used a much quiter music or no music at all.
A surely familar name especially as well for DUEL and of course various COLUMBO scores way beyond Spielberg (I have an “unmentional” of that). Beseide that I have the scores GRASSHOPPER, RED SKY AT THE MORNING and THE DOMINO PRINCIPLE in my digital collection. been a while I listened to them so I cannot say much according to some internal labels I liked them 😉
Of course there is also his original KOJAK theme:
There is a cool cover version by Willie Bobo:
I also have these themes labeled as by him:
Theme to the short lived 1973 action series FIREHOUSE:
Harry O first season theme:
There are surely some more.
I never had the album for unknown reasons but I watched the 1989 version of AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAY mini series starring Pierce Brosnan and Peter Ustinov which is also still available digitalls. TThe main title is nice:
Zimmer is clearly not on the classic technical level like Williams but who is 😉 He just comes more from pop certainly. I can find the more experimental/atmospheric approach absolutely valid in general. I can even find music and rhythm in noises although that is certainly not for every day listen. I have my problems with DUNE as well especially in the movie itself as I think I mentioned somewhere earlier on this topic.
Yeah, it’s fluid bread after all 😉
So is the plan 😉
Doldinger filmography, wow. 129 composer credits on imdb! 😳🙈
Yeah, it is a lot (but wait for the Mike Post filmography I am also working on ;-)). IMDB has errors as usual but combining with other sources I even made efforts to verify 2/3 – 3/4 of the entries. Most series I infact even know so. Expect some obscure TV movie stuff that is not available in any form.
I see. Well, if you can stretch yourself to at least one of the others – THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS – I’ll let you have a pass. 😉
The “Closing titles” is especially nice if I remember correctly. As I mentioned before my favorite period of Zimmer are indeed the early years from RAIN MAN to the advent of the “Power anthem”.
Indeed, I somehow overread that sentence! A deluxe edition complete and chronological would however be nice 😉
Maybe because both are not these “in your face” muscual power anthem scores?
Yeah, but that prince at least wanted to give you some millions, right? 😉
Awesome that now even e-mail spammers have discovered that unpaid customs may be something to hook on 😉
When Hans Zimmer originally came to the scene, I really like RAIN MAN (catchy score), but didn’t pick up the soundtrack album (which seemed to contain only two tracks). Same with BLACK RAIN. Hans Zimmer was there, his music was effective in the films, but it wasn’t the type of music I sought out apart from the film. (Nowadays, I have both the Quartet and the La-La Land edition of BLACK RAIN.)
Although I was already in Goldsmith/Williams at the time (North came later) I indeed bought both the RAIN MAN (LP) and the BLACK RAIN (CD). albums back but I was also dissapointed by all the songs especially on the RAIN MAN album then (Latter I learned that Zimmer basically re-used the base from A WORLD APART that got him the gig). So far have none of the later expanded releases mostly. I have an “unmentionables” of both and actually the tracks on the album represent the scores not that bad. If both were available as downloads I might buy both but as CDs they have no priority to me due to the prices.
I do consider THE THIN RED LINE one of his most effective scores, too.
Well, i will not be buying it. 33 dollars plus shipping and tax is too much.
Yeah, insane on the soundtrackcorner both cost 42.95 euros locally right away because of all that (21 somethingper CD is actually a fairly “normal” price though…………). Glad that they are not a priority for me 😉
Too bad, such an interview would surely be a huge traffic benefit for the site 😉 Seems arte will re-upload the Krakau concert video in a few days:
https://www.arte.tv/de/videos/118188-000-A/the-world-of-hans-zimmer/As ususal that is a shortened 60 min version of the DVD/BlueRay release. Interestingly when it was online last time some months ago the ZDF had a 74 min version of it.
