Is that the right direction? Not sure anymore.
The photo does not really tell the direction, does it? 😉
That hand written font on the Intrada CD of STRAIGHT STORY is actually from posters, used with different images:
https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/404-the-straight-story/images/posters
https://www.listal.com/viewimage/423195Unfortunately, Jon, Amazon disallowed hotlinking (ie linking to their photos other places) years ago, that’s why your picture doesn’t show. I usually use Spotify or Discogs instead.
Just to add that most sites don’t allow hotlinking because it eats the server bandwidth and may cause costs. Not that amazon would have to care about that 😉
Many sites provide embedding mechanism like Youtube or Spotify so just pasting the URL on a separate link should be tried first. Amazon does not though it seems…
Oh yes, lots of different ethnic modes in his work, for Egoyan, Ang Lee and beyond. ARARAT and NATIVITY STORY are among my favs too. Others include EXOTICA (one of my favourite films as well!), THE ICE STORM, THE SWEET HEREAFTER, LIFE OF PI, ALIAS GRACE and WATER, which he did with A.R. Rahman.
Yeah, not to forget his (only?) western score for Ang Lee’s RIDE WITH THE DEVIL.
I remember I got this as a digital promo years ago. I liked quite a few of the tracks, others not so much, but as you say, it was overwhelmingly long. And I never set aside time to create a whittled playlist. Be sure to let us know if you come up with one.
We’ll see, once I ripped it maybe 😉 I actually rarely do playlists of scores.
I am currently listening to the 4CD set EL HOMBRE Y LA TIERRA by Anton Garcia Abril.
https://quartetrecords.com/product/el-hombre-y-la-tierra/One of the album I have listend not I never saw or heard of this documentary series but bought it some years ago on a Quartet Records sale. Of course – doing the THor – 4CDs is a bit long and it could surely be condensed. But it flows quite nicely and not overly dramatic, bombastic or dissonant music mostly. A very “European film score” often reminding me a bit of Delerue and Morricone. I knew Garia Abril only from his italo western score TEXAS ADDIO previously and didn’t know he was a quite active concert composer as well.
ARARAT is a nice score as well and his NATIVITY STORY is one of my favorite “Christmas albums” 😉
He does not only do nice Middle Eastern sounds. His KAMA SUTRA has lots of Indian and with his brother Jeff he did two concept albums with Celtic sounds that I somehow dig.I am not a completist by definition of anyone. I don’t need to have everything exactly. I have quite a lot by some composers like Goldsmith, Williams or Morricone though.
So, we’re stuck in a glitch in the space-time continuum here? Cool. 😀
Well, fits as we’re still talking about physical media over here 😉
Great Rozsa scores (although I don’t agree about those rowing cues and actions personally)
that’s why I mean I have everything I ever longed for, not that I have actually everything.
Actually I was trying to refer to that! No one needs “everything” ;-). I sadly just cannot always pick up things when they are relased, too.
[Nevermind, this was a post about mail forwarding services, but after some googling, I see that they’re all silly expensive].
You know that you as admin can delete posts, too 😉
I only know CARAVANS which is a nice score. I knew that Batt produced a lot but was not exactly aware whom.
Yes, but the exchange rate screws things up a lot. As I said, the Norwegian krone has plummeted in just the last few years, and is not really representative of “normal circumstances” or “normal inflation”. It’s currently the weakest currency in the western world(!). So if you use the more normal 2018 rates, for example, it’s more like 18-19 Euro.
Yes, you are right, my fault! That’s more matching our price over here.
US CDs are not more expensive than EU CDs, it’s the shipping back and forth that costs, if you look at the actual prices, they are roughly the same.
Yes, true. The CD prices itself indeed didn’t raise that much. In the US that is. In the end it does not matter why because over here their end prices in fact raised significantly.
I also didn’t buy anything from Kendall although there are a lot of things of interest. Other than you I have not everything I ever wanted because I have to be picky what I buy. Maybe not as much as Thor has to. I really have to want things to throw out 40+ Euros for something. In fact I haven’t bought any CDs this year so far! I did buy a very few downloads.
150-180 NOK is around 13-16 Euros today if I see right. That’s a price I had not for soundtrack releases or any release in years. Around 20 is the standard for years even before the pandemic unless you maybe had a really mainstream movie release.
CD prices like releases from European labels like Musicbox, Quartet or Caldera are still in that reasonable normal prices (if shipping is ignored…). But US release prices really increased.
I could imagine that a lot of these 2nd online vendors might have even trashed lots of soundtrack CDs they had. If they even sell even less than they ever did before being a niche, just free the space…
His last great role was in ALL IS LOST in 2013
I liked his THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN and OUR SOULS AT NIGHT (which also has probably the last Goldenthal score to a film that is not by his wife). Of course all nowhere near the classics.
Other favourites are THE CHASE, ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN and SNEAKERS.
Good list. I would add THREE DAYS OF CONDOR and especially THE STING which is a favorite since childhood days.
Most “real” jazz is not 100% “created in the moment of playing.” Jazz musicians play arrangements. (See Art Tatum.) Even much free jazz will use some sort of a roadmap as a jumping off point. (See Anthony Braxton.) Improvisation in jazz usually occurs within existing frameworks.
That’s why I mentioned the “base composition” 😉 Anyway, it’s not my opinion as I am not pinned down to those definitions. And it gets difficult with crossover styles anyway. It’s all rather fluid to me. After all improvisiation is a large part of lots of styles, too.
My impression is also that improvisation and the communication of the players during it is the defining key moment of jazz. Just jazz chords itself does not make music jazz. Losts of 70s music uses them without technically being jazz. That’s why some jazz purists will not consider a written solo (like Williams’ noted above) as real jazz, basically everything that is not created in the moment of playing (besides the obviously existing base composition).
Yes, I have some “promos” of Lewis digitally. I generally like him but it never clicked that much to become an actual fan. There is always this mysterious “rejected GoldenEye score” that was said to be by him but apparently he clarified himself it’s not his.
Must not be bad thing and depends how much he has already composed on synthesizers and how much he was involved in the orchestration observing it. Even back then you didn’t need to “write” in classic notation if using sequenzers.
Glad we could solve it finally 😉 The yellow background is meant to indicate the pinned status actually.
Still not fully understanding. This topic “Forum feedback” and “Welcome …” are pinned so always the first two. All others are listed by their latest repies and appear as intended to me. As of the time of my reply:
- The R.I.P. Thread – 15 minutes ago
- Film music books – 19 minutes ago
- Been to any good concerts lately? – 1 hour, 2 minutes ago
If you are loggedin you see the actual status. If not you might get a cached version that does not reflect the actual status until the cache updates. Which it does every 3600. That is counted since the last caching so individual for each page of the site. That cache is needed as the site respectively the server in general has some speed issues every now and then.
I know him by name and certainly saw some of the movies he scored but he is really a few blank spot to me. I think one of the composers I have nothing of.
Good grief, that sounds so much worse than here… Even the new roof the house right next to me (I live in a house block with three houses) was not that loud… I have one of the biggest constructions site on whole Hamburg around the corner half a kilometer where they build a new underground line. Gladly don’t notice much of it all… Some direct residents where offered hotels at some heavy phase even though…
Hopefully the at some time arriving new neighbour(s) above me are not that rumaging type…
Well, it would just repeat bits and pieces, perhaps some replies could be moved. But I might open a topic sometime, too 😉
Lots of live “musique concrete” currently over the day for about 1.5 weeks as the flat right above mine is renovated right now 😉
Since Spotify now also features lossless it may be another nail to the coffin of CDs and downloads… (We maybe should have our own topic about physical vs digital media instead of hijjacking topics ;-))
You can at least jump to the latest post in any topc directly on the left column. But I fear there is nothing available to jump to the latest post that was posted after you last visit. I don’t think that last visit info is even stored anywhere.
Okay, but isn’t having the latest topics on top basically providing that? Other than that we have nothing for that I fear.
I could possibly list the lastest replies itself like we do with comments. But that would not be user specific the latest since the last visit.
Yeah, that sounds like Thor 😅
Probably its too complete and chronological 😉
No one seemed to have missed it but we now have forum search form as the main one from the site header only searches the actual articles.
It lists full replies that contain the search term so can be a bit overwhelming. -
