A double review could also be interesting.
As for Smith, I’m aware of his earlier books (I don’t own them), but I wasn’t aware he was still active as a writer.
I haven’t read any of his. It’s on one of these todo lists “sometime”…
Woo-hoo, the Williams book has arrived! Can’t wait to delve in!

Seems Stephen C. Smith who previously wrote biographies of Herrmann and Steiner has a new book coming:
“Hitchcock and Herrmann: The Friendship and Film Scores That Changed Cinema”There is quite a bit of reverb, but done rather tastefully, I think. Spacious sound for spacious music.
I heard a few from that series although I only had one with music by Chaplin which sold many years ago. Recoding was okay but I could not stand that reverb.
I must say, I prefer Steiner’s KK sequel score “Son of Kong” over King Kong. It’s Stromberg album paired with The Most Dangerous Game is probably my favourite Steiner album.
For sure a good album and a suprising good sequel score I expected to be more a rehash than it is. Another Steiner score I like very much is THE ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN. The complete Tribute is nice but here I also find the Gerhardt suite beats it. Maybe because I knew it first…
PRINCE AND THE PAUPER is a great score as almost all Korngolds. I don’t know this album – isn’t this series a bit cursed by too much reverd on the recording? – but the later Tribute recording of Stromberg and Gerhardt recorded a nice suite on the Classic Film Score series, too.
Steiner can be a bit too routine but I like a lot scores of him. KING KONG and TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE are also favorites of mine. I have even two recording of KING KONG: THe older Fred Steiner one and the newer complete Marco Polo one with Stromberg. This one I like in more complete form. Interestingly I prefer the Gerhardt suite of TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE over the complete Stromberg recording. Steiner like often Waxman generally often works better in suites for I think.
Just realized that I have the Marco Polo recording of MARK TWAIN. Haven’t heard it for a while but remeber it as a nice score.
Always sad to hear. Although I like Supertramp I primarily know the “best of” only… And was not really aware of the issues between the two…
Never heard of Mark Hart before. I liked the first 3 albums of Crowded House a lot – stil listen to them occasionally – but after the 4th I lost track of them…
I still like them, but I guess few people nowadays bother, certainly no casual listeners.
Well, most are just “radio type listeners” that don’t care that much and just listen. I even know people that rarely listen to music over the day (of course on work you probably can’t generally) but even otherwise.
And of course we especially were within a super niche when I stared to dive in end of 80s/early 90s and we actually still are 😉

I do too. Never understood why people hate saxophone. Of course it can be annoying, just like almost any other like especially solo violin 😉
Yes. At least the teenagers I know don’t know artists or albums. They just now playlists. And they chose them by subject, title or recommendation.
Me too. But “collectors” were always in the minority. Many were just content with the radio and the random playlist is just the equivalent (even better probably as no annoying moderator ;-))
And I get it. Why make a B side if noone buys singles?
Probably becasue there were no “sides” even with CD singles anymore 😉 I also remember those maxi singles with extended or different versions. Now they just release the track on streaming and as a video on youtube.
The Coppolas are a dynasty. Various relatives appeared in Coppola’s movies like his sister Thalia Shire or daughter Sofia Coppola. His uncle Antonio Coppola was also a composer but not sure if they worked together.
Well, CDs niche within the niche for some time 😉 And not to speak of the prices… As long as thing are not streaming only and I at least can get a (lossless) download I am fine. But downloads are already a similar niche like CDs salewise…

What about sending regular updates about recent discussions to those who already are registered in the forum? For example once a week.
You can subscribe to the forum or individual topics on the top right corner. Then you should get mail notifications. I think you also get them if you started a topic.
Isn’t that what an “RSS feed” is (the orange icon up in the corner)? I think Malte knows.
RSS is not the same but can be used like that with an RSS reader (same for the RSS feed of posts on the site itself). It does not require registration as it is public for public content.
Is there a way to show the most recent posts at the top of the list? I thought that most message boards did that by default.
Actually that descending order is the default order for blogs and other general news sections but no forum I know does that. All use ascending order as that is the “discussion or reading order” of course. There is no setting for this.
On the forum page the topic with the latest reply will be at the top and on the right you can click on the date
There was once a video game composer – I don’t name here on purpose – who completely vanished because of some misbehaviour. Still like some of his scores from years ago.

You could say a bit opportunistic and even thoughtless maybe depending on what it is and perhaps sometimes you don’t know when being hire how a films turns out… At least someone supporting a questionable film because he actually believes in it is technically consequent…

Absolutely, I didn’t want to excuse such behaviour in any form. You can witness such behaviour on social media comments a lot as well…
And of course nostalgia can play a role, but that role isn’t limited to film music.

Favorite scores of his are AMERICAN BEAUTY (very original at the time, everybody copied it… quirky), SCENT OF A WOMAN, ANGELS IN AMERICA (one of his more dramatic scores, a great album), THE HORSE WHISPERER and MEET JOE BLACK.
Indeed, AMERICAN BEAUTY is a classic, SCENT OF A WOMAN and MEET JOE BLACK I have and I think I also liked. Really have to revisit those.
I think it’s sometimes a kind of nostalgia tied to when someone personally saw a movie was watched and its music heard. So even some bland score or film) can have a certain value to someone no one else can understand. And then add to that that tastes can be quite different, too. Probably I am too forgiving on some things 😉
Yeah, I agree. Probably a general problem with (die hard) fan bases in general that don’t like “their genre” to be critized.
According to Wikipedia plenty of usages and it mentions Vangelis and Richter and also Tangerine Dream:

I liked his Bond scores although probably not his best ones. I do like him but are not really fan. SHAWSHANK is one of the CDs I sold quite some years ago when I thought I needed to get rid of some I rarley listen too (yeah, what a joke and I regret having sold those…even back before streaming then it really wasn’t much…). I always like ROAD TO PERDITION because of those Irish/Celtic influences and ANGELS IN AMERICA. I have less than 50 scores and probably should review them again as I cannot say much about them right now…
Not sure if I heard it directly before, but it instantly somehow reminded me of Delerue’s BLACK ROBE actually.

I think, too and found it funny. Of course at first it sounde like te typical classical snob talking about film music that I heard 30+ years ago the first time when I relaly got into film scores. And Williams sounds always so modest about himself compared to the giants of music in general that he surely underestimates himself as well sometimes.
And he even is often right, especially many modern but also older scores could often use some work to flow as listening experience. As we often discussed here with C&C. I even think that often with GOlden Age scores ome Gerhard suites flow way better than more complete scores.
Fond memories of the single track roads though it’s been 30 years I have been to Scotland. Wa a week tour by car staying at bed & breakfast locations. From Edinburgh through the Highlands including a visit on Skye and back. I even saw Nessie (okay, that’s a lie ;-)).

Glass, Riley, Reich, Nyman, that kind of stuff — I’ve never been able to grasp that properly. I mean, there’s some I like. I enjoy Glass’ VISITORS, Nyman’s THE PIANO and some Greenaway.
Nyman can be tough because he is often more “scratchy” chamber music. I don’t love everything. Another more lyrical and almost morriconesque score of his basically western score THE CLAIM. Or WONDERLAND if I recall right.
Glass can be a little tiresome being a bit too repetitive (even if technically it often isn’t).
Wouldn’t Sakamoto also fit in this “minimalistic” vein often?
I know him by name and saw some movies like WALTZ WITH BASHIR but I am totally unfamiliar with him and indeed have not a single album by him. I do like minimalism like Glass or Nyman but I think his music didn’t grab me.
I usually keep albums as they are when importing from CD or downloading them. I don’t divide compilations into several albums. I would only do so if its a 2CD which two separate scores (e.g. the 4CD Star Wars box or the Airport 77/Airport 79 2CD) or sometimes if two versions (film vs albm recording or so). Different editions I keep always separate to be able to see which version is what. But I regulary change meta data as that is often so off on digital download services…
That animation movie recently was shown on arte over here but sadly I missed it. I think I first noticed Kilar with Dracula. A film where I also noticed him was Zanussi’s THE SILENT TOUCH which – as I learned later – was made around his concert work “Exodus”.
Obviously Kilar, with DRACULA, KÖNIG DER LETZEN TAGE, DEATH AND THE MAIDEN, THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY and THE NINTH GATE being favourites, but those are all his most famous. Would love to check out some of his lesser known stuff. I remember some of them being played at one of the Krakow festivals I attended, where he was also in attendance.

I just checked but we have no means to change any such behaviour neither via the forum itself nor the Akismet spam filter. Interesstingly the forum setting to actually use Akismet spam filter is off. TProbably we never had it enabled… But since you need to be registered and that is covered we probably fine for now. The links limit was WP standard setting though and indeed limited to 2. I raised it a bit to a few more.
