Yeah, after 40 minutes of Jerry, I’m usually good.

King Kong 1933. Absolutely no problematic issues with women or minorities in this one, folks. Still a wonder of special effects. Jackson’s is better.

Create a shelter and various support programs for homeless, un/under-employed, or otherwise perilous trans people. Probably buy a cd or two.

Some composers just fall off. Copland was kind of like that.

I find the Berg Violin Concerto about as heartbreaking and emotional as any piece in existence.

Schoenberg with his 12 tone vanity project.

But I love Schoenberg’s 12 tone vanity project lol. Also Berg, but I’m a little cool on Webern.

Opposite of Telemann, Paul Dukas is a composer after my own heart. He wrote like 13 pieces, never repeated a genre, and destroyed anything he felt wasn’t up to snuff. He left us with some delightful nuggets. I even like his opera.

Sorry Thor, but I couldn’t pick Telemann’s music out of a lineup, so I can’t help you. After Handel and Bach, which I find enough to be getting along with, I don’t listen to a lot of baroque music.

I would love to do this, but video stuff is too intimidating for me right now. I work third shift, so the time actually works for me, too. A shame. I hope you all have a good time. Maybe someday…

I think I would add Jazz as the fourth though.

Jazz has been, through its history, folk, popular, and art music. In taxonomic terms, those three are the domains, and Jazz a kingdom. I think it could be safely called American art music at this point, but why mess with a good thing.

The term we’re looking for is (Western) art music, though the term “classical music,” as opposed to music from the classical period, is synonymous, and most people will know what you mean when using it. Art, pop, and folk are really the three forms of music.

Are we talkin’ Revenge of the Sith? My least favorite Star Wars ost. Like Azkaban, I find it lumpy and disjointed. It was made on a very scene-by-scene basis, with instrumentation and style seemingly changing at will. 2005 also marked the year the steller sound we had become accustomed to began changing.

Someone once called TPM “noodly,” which I almost threw hands for, but if you want to hear JW noodle, for real, for 7 straight minutes, just listen to the opening track with the horns, trombones, and trumpets passing around non-material like co-workers after the world’s most unnecessary group meeting.

“Do you reach an age where you go off sci-fi?” God, I hope not. I’m 42 and it hasn’t happened yet. I’m finally getting to season 3 of TOS, which I’ve never seen. It’s amazing and terrible. I love it. I recently watched the finale to TNG, which I hadn’t seen since it aired in 1994. The 60s and the 90s where golden ages for tv sci-fi.

This has been a year (so far) of tremendous change for me, as such, I do not always have the mental capacity to come here and debate/share/schmooze about film music, but it has become my main outlet for doing so. Is there a classical thread? Would there be any interest in starting one? It honestly takes up more of my listening time than film music, but I’ve never found a classical message board not full of pretentious pseudo-intellectuals. You all seem cool.

I also really enjoyed the series (for reasons having nothing AT ALL to do with Katie McGrath), but I’ve only seen it once. A rewatch in honor of Giles, perhaps. I already rewatched Buffy last year.

Oh, misophonia sounds really unfortunate to have as a music fan just like having tinnitus like Thor… Dry miked strings can be tough for sure – some Goldsmiths come to mind especially.

It’s always bugged me, but as I’ve gotten older, and as almost all my listening is through headphones these days, it’s become almost untenable. I’m pretty much limited to soundtracks from the late 80s-early 2000s, and Telarc and a couple of other small labels for classical.

I can’t even listen to my beloved OT soundtracks. It feels like chewing on styrofoam. The sound of strings on pre-Dolby analogue is painful, but even that doesn’t help close-miking. And every recording since 2005 has been, like, inside the cellos, and I want to crawl out of my skin when I hear them. The double basses make me want to start a war or something, and the various reeds aren’t much better. It’s the wood and the vibrating and the friction, and it only gets worse with exposure. If I go a long time without listening to it, I can stand it for a bit, but after a few hours, just…nope.

Disclosure Day may be the worst-sounding Williams score I’ve heard since the 70s.

Unfortunately, my misophonia has gotten worse in the last year or so, and the mastering on this album is doing it no favors (dry, close-miced strings drive me nuts. High, low, it doesn’t matter). I have to take it slow, but I like what I’m hearing. It will never go down as an all-timer, and I can hear a few instances of him just sort of…wearing out in a cue. I probably won’t spend my limited money on this one, but it’s a minor miracle it exists at all, and I’m thankful.

As far as specialty soundtrack releases go, Jerry Goldsmith is one of the biggest sellers there is

Yes, but as those labels are mostly funded by my aforementioned aficionados, it kind of proves my point. It’s not that I never find Goldsmith scores in a second-hand store, they’re just less common than Williams, Horner, or Barry. At least, in my experience. I’ve had to buy most of them off eBay or Discogs.

most accessible serial scores I know.

It is very coherent, and very well done. I love it, but I think “accessible serialism” is a bit of a contradiction in terms. I think for your average film score fan, or general music enthusiast, the Second Viennese School is something of a rubicon. Melody sells.

I’m a huge Tim Morrison fan too, and Apollo 13 is my top score of all time.

He’s on my trumpet Mt. Rushmore (formerly-professional trumpet player, here) along with Maurice Murphy, Bud Herseth, and Louis Armstrong.

not finding his CD albums in secondhand stores

John Williams has a way of writing very complicated music in an accessible way. He’s like Mahler. Jerry could when he wanted to, like in Star Trek, he just didn’t want to all that often. A long way of saying his stuff didn’t sell as well, or more to aficionados, who are less likely to get rid of it, so you’re less likely to find it second-hand.

                                                1. The Phantom Menace (Would be Star Wars, but the sound is, uhhh, debatable)
                                                2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (It’s so much more than the last 15 minutes)
                                                3. E.T. – The Extra-Terrestrial (ditto)
                                                4. Poltergeist (I prefer Jerry’s music in the films, but this one is terrific)
                                                5. Totall Recall (ditto)
                                                6. Apollo 13 (James Horner and Tim Morrison are at least 50% responsible for starting my love of music)
                                                7. Sorcerer’s Stone (A terrific score, but an even better album)
                                                8. Jurassic Park (Ah, the other 50%)
                                                9. Amistad (The best of JW’s world-music scores, and a terrific album)
                                                10. King Kong (2005) (I wish JNH was pickier about his projects)

Mine is ranked. Because I believe in living dangerously.

Maybe I need to see it again, but that ending (not the time jump or robots, but the contrivance of the scenario) soured me on what already felt like a peripatetic and unfocused film. I’m also not sure minimalism, which I love, and John Williams are the best fit. I owned the expansion and the ost, and found both of them a chore. It’s just not my favorite all around, I’m sorry to say.
