John Williams – Violin Concerto No. 2With the John Williams concert albums you can be lucky at Black Friday sales. Are you really just interested in the BluRays or the versions BluRay plus audio CDs?
I never was a completist in film music. For my favourite Bands yes. But movie soundtracks, no. I got a little infected, when I joined the JWFan community and when I found out, that it gets more and more difficult to purchase soundtrack CDs at a reasonable price. There I started buying stuff, especially golden age rerecordings, without really knowing it just to check it out. And I became kind of a completist for John Williams.
Btw, two albums that I missed out on in physical format are Joel McNeely’s rerecording of Herrmann’s North By Northwest and Rózsa’s Fedora. Both I have just in digital format.
The interesting question here is rather, how long are your lists of albums that are missing to complete your collection?
Right. The discussion we have is not about music, but about our joined living space. And in our flat there are no more walls for more shelves.
She wouldn’t mind if I bought another thousand CDs and store them in a box under the bed. But I believe she’s right and I took the challenge to get it managed with my two shelves.Do you plan on unloading some of those albums you don’t feel you need?
Sometimes yes. Especially, since I promised to my wife my two new CD cupboards will last forever and I won’t need a new one ever. And these are full now. So, if I get new albums, I will have to throw something out.

The times when I counted my albums are long gone. But in the meantime I think, I own a lot of albums, that I wouldn’t have needed and would have been fine to just experience them once or twice on streaming. But maybe their time.will come. Especially some of the Stromberg rerecordings.Yes, while I do have THE RED HOUSE on CD, it’s ripped and I only play the files. I only ever play files, actually, so how the CD is split doesn’t really matter to me all that much. Though disc two is 25 minutes long, so it’s not that short. 🙂

Many things get smaller in distant memory.For the Red House rerecording I found it weird, that disc one has a running time about 70 minutes and disc two is just about 15 minutes.
I remember liking disc 2, but I hardly ever played it as disc 1 covered most of the runtime. They should have split the score rather in the middle. Or leave out five minutes to be able to put everything on one disc.There’s already two 30-minute suites from The Jungle Book in modern sound. One from early 80s on the Colosseum label, and the other one from Chandos
The Chandos album is in my top 5!
But it could use a remaster.Might be that the German version removed them but on the Englisch original version they are there. Beside they do disturb the flow a little and probably would better fit as extra tracks.
Nono. The German version has the songs. But yes, I wish they had put the song versions into the bonus section and not the instrumental versions. Then I would have liked the album better.

Ivanhoe is great, too. And I wish, I had the Bernstein recording of Young Bess.
I used to like The Red House. But in the meantime I rarely listen to it.I hope, your tinitus doesn’t get worse, Thor, and you will still be able to enjoy music forever.

By the way, if I had a wish for New Rozsa rerecordings, I would vote for Jungle Book and Lust For Life.I found Bush a bit “whiney” in the 80s and 90s, but when I heard that David Gilmour had helped discover her, I said to myself that there HAD to be something there that I had missed. If my hero Gilmour liked her, so should I. So I gave her another chance, and certainly found things to enjoy. But nowhere near any favourites lists.
If you are in favour of female artists supported by Gilmour, how do you like Sam Brown?
I used to be a fan of her as well for some time. During her great first three albums at least.
I found it noticeable in your list, Thor, that there are no ladies included.
In the early 80s there was just Kate Bush for me. And I always wondered why there weren’t more in that music area that I liked.
In the late 80s and 90s it started getting better.I agree with the first four entries of your list, Nick. These are the respective artists best albums.
