DeltakerI find it curious when this sort of question is asked. There seems to be a presumption that a composer may only be as good as what they have done already and couldn’t do something novel.
(I have had a few glasses of wine and may be a bit argumentative.)
I am sure that there weren’t many who thought that Howard Shore was a bizarre choice for Lord of the Rings (and, perhaps, hadn’t heard Looking For Richard but couldn’t see how that style would have been a good fit for Middle Earth).

DeltakerMy experience of the forum is much better on my phone compared with desktop. But that maybe more to do with my end.
On my desktop browser the forum seems to load the Norwegian version and I must use Google Translate to switch to English.
And, I am asked to log in to the forum but it fails to log in. I think because my own WordPress log in details for my blog are filled into the log in boxes.
Both issues that I think my own issues.
Thor, any chance of a “like” function for posts?

DeltakerI am not doing anything special for Easter – despite it also being my 33rd wedding anniversary on Friday (coincidentally, Anne and I were married on the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday back in 1992. It saved us a small fortune in flowers for the church. We just used theirs!)
Where we live in North Wales, for us to go anywhere by car we need to use the A55, the main artery road in and out of North Wales – a popular holiday destination and the road is the main route to the ferry to Ireland. The end result it gets clogged with holiday traffic, and we always avoid the roads on Bank Holiday weekends.
But, we will probably have a walk locally if the weather’s agreeable.

DeltakerHi Richard. Welcome aboard!

DeltakerFor me, I think that it’s less about any change in opinion of specific composers but rather how a composer changes style or the sorts of films they compose for.
Howard Shore and James Horner come to mind. I much prefer Shore’s “droney” Cronenberg efforts over much of his more recent work (with a few exceptions). And Horner’s early style is much more appealing to me than much of his later stuff.

DeltakerI wished that I liked the new ABBOTT AND COSTELLO re-recordings.
It’s not the quality of the recording. That’s excellent. I just don’t really like the style of the music. And I cant see how this specific score was such a “Holy Grail” for people.
But, I love how these scores are being given new life in the re-recordings and I hope it succeeds enough to make it worthwhile to do more.

DeltakerGoing back to John Scott for a moment. One of my favourite tracks is the end credits to Scott’s music fir SHOOT TO KILL. And, based on that track alone, I was keen on hearing the rest of the score.
However, SHOOT TO KILL is a good example for me of a score with a great single track. The rest I just didn’t like at all.

DeltakerI loved watching Abbott and Costello when I was growing up. But I have no connection with the music in their films. I find the music of this new release just annoying. Well done, but annoying.
But for Laurel and Hardy, I loved their shows and the music featured in what they did. Their short films were constantly being repeated and became very familiar with certain cues becoming favourites of mine.
A similar experience to the oft-repeated original STAR TREK series : lots of repeats and lots of re-using of music in those repeated episodes.

DeltakerThe re-recording of “ancient” scores is a case by case thing for me. I have a copy of the original score of Steiner’s SHE (released by BYU/FMA I think). But the Morgan/Stromberg re-recording on Tribute (again, I think) was like a breath of fresh air.
But the re-recording of KING OF KINGS (a release I supported) is one that I haven’t listened to all the way through. Despite the lower quality sound (though it’s not bad) the original is just so much more vibrant in the playing. And I could say the same for the CONAN re-recordings.

DeltakerBTW, I found the Paris Concerts CDs vary variable as a listening experience: some cues went into my “favourites” playlist, and some tracks I just couldn’t listen to. A lot of the more “quirky” scores just didn’t feel there was much life to them.
This 2-CD set just confirms to me that I am VERY picky about re-recordings or concert performances. The performances have to be either really faithful to the original OST versions, or they have to be completely different and trying something different (e.g., I may like something like STAR WARS done by a penny whistle sextet).
But, anything that’s trying to be faithful to the original but there’s something different from the OST – like a instrument solo that’s not quite there, or a vocalist that doesn’t quite match the original – then I don’t tend to like it. Even if an album that I have grown to love is rereleased with “improved mastering” that plays about with the mix of the instruments, then that turns me off too.

DeltakerThanks for the feedback. I must have missed doing something crucial to the process because it didn’t work for me. But at least I think that I am almost there!

DeltakerBTW, I couldn’t understand how to link to a Spotify album on the forum. That option appealed to most but linking artwork works well too. (But, me being me, having my two posts of artwork where the artwork are different sizes is REALLY annoying me (seeing all the different artwork sizes over at the similar FSM topic is similarly annoying) – though I do know now what I need to do to standardise sizes.)

DeltakerIt’s Benbodhi: Decoded – it seems to be a short documentary from 2024 about the founder of some sort of community. I can’t really work out much about what the documentary is about but there’s mention of things like “cc0”, “onchain”, “nouns”, etc. None of which I really understand.
